Colts Use Late Comeback to Defeat Storm 5-3
For the second time in two days, the Barrie Colts faced off against the Guelph Storm. After a convincing 8-1 win in Guelph on Friday night, the Colts looked to have the same outcome on Saturday night in Barrie for round two.
But a win for the Colts only seemed possible in the last five minutes of the game.
The Colts trailed the Storm the majority of the game, giving up two goals from former Colt, C.J. Garcia, before getting on the board with a goal from Lucas Chiodo midway through the second. However, the Storm would extend their lead to 3-1 eight minutes into the third period, seemingly having solidified a win.
But the Colts would battle back. Adrian Brown put home his first goal as a Colt with under five minutes left in the game to make it 3-2. Then, just over a minute later, Andrew Mangiapane put home a rebound from Julius Nattinen’s shot to tie the game up at 3 a piece.
After scoring twice on Friday night against the Storm, Roy Radke would score what would be the eventual game winner with two minutes left in the game tonight for a 4-3 lead.
In a last ditch effort, the Storm would pull their goalie with a minute to go, but couldn’t generate a chance. The Colts broke up the play and Mangiapane put home an empty net goal for his second of the game to seal a 5-3 victory.
In a chippy affair with over 50 minutes in penalties, the Colts had no luck on the power play going 0 for 8, while giving up two goals on ten power play opportunities for the Storm.
Notably, Ben Hawerchuk and Justin Scott each had a pair of assists on the night, as well as Giordano Finoro, Julius Nattinen and Michael Webster, who also grabbed assists. In goal, Ruan Badenhorst and Christian Propp split time between the pipes, facing a combined 32 shots on the night.
The Colts and the Storm won’t see each other until Friday, January 8th for their first regular season meeting. In the meantime, the Colts continue their pre-season with the annual Labour Day Monday game at the Barrie Molson Centre against the Owen Sound Attack at 6:00pm.
