Colts Shut Down by the Gens
The Oshawa Generals would score a pair of quick goals early in the first and second periods lead off by leading goal scorer Allan McShane to give the visiting squad all they would need skating to a 7-3 victory at the Barrie Molson Centre.
The Colts were back at it Saturday night returning home to face off against the Oshawa Generals, the two clubs facing each other for the second time in 9 days for the third matchup of the season, Barrie so far taking both contests in the season series.
Colts rookie net minder Kai Edmonds would get his 4th start of the season and he would be tested early.
The Colts would have a rough start in the first half of the opening twenty minutes in their return to home ice as Oshawa’s leading goal scorer McShane would lead the Gen’s to an early 2-0 lead.
Just under two minutes into this one, Eric Henderson would send a pass cross-ice to McShane in the right circle, sliding a backhand under the pads of Edmonds.
At 5:05, with the Gens on the powerplay they would increase their lead to two. McShane would feed Serron Noel in tight, Edmonds would make the initial save but Jack Studnicka would bury the rebound.
The Colts would settle down testing Oshawa starter Cole Ceci on multiple occasions but would head into the intermission trailing by two.
Just over five minutes into the second period the Gens would have a repeat of the 1st period’s goals, adding two markers quickly to put the visiting bench up 4-0.
First would have Henderson firing a low shot on goal that would be stopped, but Noel would be right there to cash in. Moments later the Gen’s would get the luck on their side as well. Sean Allen would send a high shot from the blueline banking off the back of Hayden McCool and into the Barrie goal.
Ceci would continue his stellar play in the visitor’s end. Nearing the midway point of the middle frame, Jason Willms would be sprung free on a breakaway, but Ceci would rob him with the glove save.
The Colts would keep the pressure coming. With Barrie on the powerplay Ben Hawerchuck would fire it on goal, Ceci would make the save but a Gen’s defender would knock Hawerchuck into Ceci sending him sprawling. With the cage left wide open Alexey Lipanov would rip it into the back of the net for his 9th of the season to make it 4-1. T.J Fergus would an assist on the play.
Before the period was out Oshawa would add one more to regain the four-goal lead. After a drive from the point, Domenico Commisso would get a couple chances on the rebound banging in the second attempt to give the Gen’s the 5-1 lead into the third period.
In the third Oshawa would continue their offensive push potting goals from Renars Krastenbergs and Barrie native Matthew Brassard.
Just past the midway point of the final period Joey Keane would rush the puck up ice maneuvering through several defenders and faking the shot before snapping it under the pad of Ceci for 5th of the season and Barrie’s second goal in the game. Lipanov would get the lone assist on the play.
The Colts wouldn’t go out on the night quietly. With just over five minutes remaining in the game and with the Colts on the powerplay Lipanov would feed Zach Magwood in the high slot, he’d rip one past the glove of Ceci for his 13th goal of the season. Fergus would gather his second assist of the game.
That would be it for the Colts as Oshawa would skate to victory.
The Colts will now head up the highway to take on the North Bay Battalion for a Sunday afternoon matchup to finish out the weekend.
