Colts’ select defenceman Rasmus Andersson 37th overall in 2014 CHL Import Draft
Barrie, ON– Barrie Colts General Manager Jason Ford announced today that they have selected defenceman Rasmus Andersson in the 1st round, 37th overall in the 2014 CHL Import draft.
The 17-year old Swedish defenceman played for the Malmo Redhawks last season where he collected 3 goals, 10 assists for 13 points in 43 games played. Andersson was fourth in team scoring amongst defenceman and was the youngest player on the roster.
“We are extremely pleased we got Andersson in the European Draft today. He is a right-shot defenceman that has very good hockey sense, excellent offensive instincts and a very good shot from the point. He has already played professionally in Sweden against older and mature players, so this experience will help him make the adjustment to Major Junior,” said General Manager Jason Ford.
The 6’0”, 213lbs defenceman is the son of former NHLer Peter Andersson who played for the New York Rangers/Florida Panthers and brother of Calle Andersson who was drafted by the New York Rangers 119th overall in 2012.
“This selection fits an organizational need, and we are very excited about what he will bring to the hockey club,” added Ford.
Last season the Malmo, Swedish native played with former Barrie Colt Joey Tenute who played in Barrie from 2000 to 2002.
The Colts also held the 97th overall pick in the 2014 Import Draft but passed on the pick to retain goaltender Daniel Gibl. Gibl was the only goaltender selected in the 2013 CHL import draft and is the last European netminder to be drafted into the Canadian Hockey League.
