Colts Fall 6-3 to Steelheads
For the second time this season, the Barrie Colts traveled to Mississauga to take on the Steelheads for an afternoon matchup. Last time the two teams met, the Colts were able to shut out the Steelheads, blanking them 6-0. The second time around though would be a different story.
The Colts were put back before the game even started, dealing with a number of suspensions to top players and playing with a short bench. The Colts would get on the board first, but gave up four straight goals to the Steelheads before attempting to claw their way back. Going into the third period and only trailing by one goal, the Colts gave up two goals and would ultimately fall by three goals, losing 6-3.
Justin Scott led the Colts with two points from a goal and an assist, while Adrian Carbonara scored for the second straight game. Rasmus Andersson also tallied a goal in the loss. Zachary Magwood, Brendan Lemieux, Aidan Brown and Michael Webster each notched assists; notably giving Aidan Brown his first OHL point.
In goal for the Colts, Ruan Badenhorst played 53:08 minutes while giving up 6 goals on 21 shots. Christian Propp, called up for the Colts, finished the game playing a total of 6:52 minutes and stopping one shot.
In the first period, after Cordell James laid a big hit in the Steelheads end, the puck went back up the board to Lemieux who threw it in the slot for Carbonara. Carbonara stayed with the puck and dug away at the rebound to score his second goal in two games, giving the Colts a 1-0 lead.
The lead wouldn’t be long lived though as less than a minute later, the Steelheads broke into the Colts zone and Nathan Bastian fired a wrist shot past Badenhorst for his 10th goal of the season. The Steelheads first goal ultimately released a stream of Teddy Bears too, as it was their annual Teddy Bear Toss game night. Josh Burnside and Stefan LeBlanc assisted the power play Steelheads goal.
On the power play again and with 22 seconds to play in the first period, the Steelheads grabbed the lead when Everett Clark fired a shot and scored his sixth goal of the season. Clark’s goal was assisted by Stephen Gibson and Damian Bourne and gave the Steelheads a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.
Before the halfway mark in the second period, the Steelheads would add two more goals from Michael McLeod and Alexander Nylander – each their first goals of the game. Nylander and McLeod also recorded an assist on each other goals, along with Burnside and Bastian notching assists.
With the Steelheads leading 4-1, the Colts took advantage of a power play chance when Andersson walked the blue line and fed the puck towards the net. Andersson’s shot beat Steelheads goalie Jack Flinn to cut the lead to 2 with just under 8 minutes to play in the second period. Scott and Webster assisted on the power play goal, making it 4-2.
Then, 18:12 into the second period, Brown got the puck to Magwood behind the net who in turn fed Scott in the slot. Scott made no mistake and beat Flinn for his 6th goal of the season. Brown’s assist would mark his first point in his young OHL career, helping get the Colts within one goal.
But the comeback would come up short, as the Colts gave up two goals in the third period and weren’t able to bury one of their own. McLeod and Nylander added their second goals of the game, both now having 14 and 21 goals respectively throughout the season.
After Nylander’s goal, which made it 6-3 for the Steelheads, the Colts pulled Badenhorst and gave the last few minutes of play to Propp.
The Colts went 1 for 6 on their power play chances on the night, but were unable to show their typical strength when they are down a man. The Steelheads were very successful on the power play, scoring on 3 of their 4 chances.
Through 27 games, the Colts still lead the Central Division with 34 points and a record of 17-10-0-0.
