Colts dominate Wolves 9-2
Coming off four straight losses, the Barrie Colts headed to Sudbury looking to get back in the win coloumn. They did just that with a convincing 9-2 victory over the Wolves who are now 1-9-0-0 in their last ten games.
It was a night to remember as rookie goaltender Ruan Badenhorst registered his first OHL victory and forward Ben Hawerchuk also registered his first and second career OHL goals in the win.
Barrie would strike first in the contest at 3:23 of the first period when Cordell James made a nice pass from behind the net to Matthew Kreis out-front who potted home his second goal of the season. Rasmus Andersson also registered an assist on the play.
Midway through the opening twenty minutes Andrew Mangiapane and Justin Scott broke out of the Colts zone fighting off the Wolves defenders. On a nice give and go, Mangiapane drove the net and shovelled in a back hander to give Barrie a 2-0 lead headed into the break.
The Colts outshot the Wolves 9-3 in the first period.
The second period saw the Colts strike early again, as Justin Scott increased Barrie’s lead to 3-0 just 1:54 into the frame. Scott found the puck next to the post of the Wolves net before banging it home for his ninth of the season. Andrew Mangiapane and Garrett Hooey picked up the assists.
At 8:13 on a man advantage, Andrew Mangiapane would bury his second of the night on a one-timer from the side of the Wolves net. Brendan Lemieux was parked out front before making a nice dish to Mangiapane who made no mistake blasting it past netminder Samuel Tanguay. Joseph Blandisi also picked up an assist.
Sudbury would get on the board just 46 seconds later when forward Jacob Harris scored his second goal of the year to bring the game to 4-1. Just when the Wolves seemed to be gaining some momentum, forward Brendan Lemieux responded with a one-timer in the slot to put Barrie back ahead by four.
Barrie continued to out shoot the Wolves 23-12 after forty minutes.
The third period faired no better for the Wolves as the Colts put the game out of reach scoring three more times in just a minute and thirty five seconds. Andrew Mangiapane completed the hat-trick before Justin Scott added his second of the night. At 9:07 rookie forward Ben Hawerchuk notched his first career OHL goal on a nice move to his back-hand before sliding it past Tanguay. Adrian Carbonara picked up the lone assist, registering his first career OHL point.
With just over three minutes remaining in the game, Ben Hawerchuk scored his second of the night snapping a hard shot over the shoulder of Samuel Tanguay.
A dominating performance for the Colts saw them out shoot the Wolves 35-25. Goaltender Ruan Badenhorst made 23 saves in the game for his first OHL victory. Andrew Mangiapane earned the games first star honours after an impressive five point night scoring three goals and two assists.
The Barrie Colts will now head to Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Greyhounds Saturday night at the Essar Centre. Game time is 7:00pm.
