Hawerchuk Tips Home the Overtime Winner in Sudbury
Barrie’s Ben Hawerchuk tips home the Overtime winner in a 4-3 thriller vs. the Sudbury Wolves.
After Macauley Carson hauled down Kade Landry early in the overtime period Barrie would strike on the powerplay to end the game.
It was a shot from Landry that Hawerchuk would get a stick on that Jake McGrath had very little chance on and sent the Colts home happy. Lucas Chiodo would grab the other assist on Hawerchuks winner and second goal of the season.
Friday night had the two central division foes going head to head on a frigid evening in Sudbury.
Scoring would get started pretty early, but for the opposition. The Wolves would open the scoring in front of their home crowd just over five minutes into the period. Evan Krassey would be sitting alone in front and have the puck bounce right to his stick before sliding it home past Leo Lazarev to open the scoring.
The lead didn’t last very long. A little over two minutes later the Colts would find the back of the net. Aidan Brown stepped into a shot just inside the Sudbury blueline, which bounced off the glass and right out front to Kyle Heitzner who spun and found the top corner on McGrath to get the boys in blue on the board. Luke Bignell would tally the second assist on the tying goal.
In the last minute of the first period Barrie was scrambling in the own zone looking to survive the first being tied, but with eleven seconds on the clock Reagan O’Grady had different plans. The puck came around the boards and he followed it with a toe drag and snapped it past Lazarev to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead into the break.
Barrie would find a way to tie things up once again. Just under six minutes into the second frame it was Jaden Peca feeding a pass through multiple skates out front to the stick of Jason Willms who laid a stick on it to tip it past the Wolves netminder and tie the game at two. Kirill Nizhnikov also picked up an assist on the goal.
The Colts had just four shots in the first period but only found themselves down one. Maybe the message in the intermission was to shoot more. Well they listened as they would take their first lead of the game thanks to the big shot of Joey Keane. He stepped into a slapshot just inside the Wolves blueline hammering home his third goal of the season past McGrath for the 3-2 lead.
Nearing the midway point of the third period the Wolves would get the game back to a tie. A shot from the point bounced off a Barrie defender and past Lazarev, a shot he had no idea where it was going. Nolan Hutcheson got credited with the tying marker for Sudbury.
Lots of chances to end the third period but neither team could find a way to score, which sent the game to overtime.
The Colts are now 2-0 vs the Wolves this season and helped push themselves to the tops of the Eastern Conference as the Petes lost on Friday evening.
Barrie will look to wrap up a perfect weekend tomorrow night at home vs. the Niagara Ice Dogs. The two teams will square off for the first time this season.
