Battalion shutdown the Colts 4-1
A trio of second period markers lead by Justin Brazeau’s pair gave the North Bay Battalion a 4-1 victory over the Barrie Colts Saturday night at the Barrie Molson Centre.
After the Colts would come out in dominating fashion in the opening twenty minutes, the wheels would fall off once again in the second period.
A big reason for the Troops turnaround was due to the play of the opposing netminder, as former Colt Christian Propp would make numerous key stops to shutdown any comeback for Barrie. His 34 saves would earn the games first star honours.
In the first of a home and home weekend series with the Battalion, the Colts were hoping to get back in the win column with their last game at the Molson Centre before the Christmas break.
In a dominating first period the Colts would finally capitalize on their second power play with just under two minutes remaining. Jake Tortora would lay a pass back for Tyler Tucker to wind and fire a rocket over the glove of Propp to take a 1-0 lead, his 8th on the campaign.
Early into the second the Troops would respond with their own man advantage. Wide open in the slot was Justin Brazeau snapping one past Edmonds to even the game at one apiece.
Brazeau wasn’t done there; On breakaway he’d evade the poke check sending it over Edmonds pad to give the Troops the lead for his 2nd of the night.
After both teams would trade penalties nearing the three minute mark, a miscue between Edmonds and his D partners would result in a third straight marker for the Troops. Edmonds would lose the handle while playing the puck and Matthew Struthers would pot it into the empty cage to put the Colts down by two.
After forty the Colts had doubled up the Troops on the shot clock 31-15 but Propp would continue to hold the fort.
The third period wouldn’t provide any hope for the faithful in the stands as the Battalion would shut down the Colts who could muster only 4 shots towards Propp and eventually Luke Moncada would ice it adding an empty netter to make the 4-1 final.
Barrie will finish up the weekend tomorrow as they head up highway 11 in a rematch with the Batallion for a 2:00pm matinee.
