60 OHL players in NHL CS Midterm Rankings

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 146 CHL players appear in NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings for the 2014 NHL Draft.

 

The domestic rankings list a total of 210 North American skaters including 127 from the CHL, also listing an additional 34 North American goaltenders including 19 that currently compete in the CHL.

 

The Ontario Hockey League leads the way with 60 players appearing in the rankings including 53 skaters and seven goaltenders, followed by 46 players from the Western Hockey League including 41 skaters and five goaltenders, and 40 players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League including 33 skaters and seven goaltenders.

 

The top-15 ranked skaters are all from the CHL beginning with forward Sam Bennett of the Kingston Frontenacs who is the top ranked skater.  The 17-year-old from Holland Landing, ON, is currently fourth in OHL scoring with 66 points in 40 games and has the league’s longest point-streak this season currently at 24 games.

 

Leon Draisaitl of the Prince Albert Raiders is ranked at number two, defenceman Aaron Ekblad of the Barrie Colts is ranked third, Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice is ranked fourth, and Michael Dal Colle of the Oshawa Generals rounds out the top five.  Another three OHL players appear in the top-10 including Nicholas Ritchie of the Peterborough Petes who is ranked seventh, Brendan Perlini of the Niagara IceDogs at eight, and defenceman Anthony DeAngelo of the Sarnia Sting who rounds out the top-10. 

 

Six of the top-10 ranked goalies are from the CHL led by Alex Nedeljkovic of the Plymouth Whalers who is ranked fifth, followed by the IceDogs’ Brent Moran at number six, and the Greyhounds’ Brandon Halverson who is ranked ninth.

 

The Niagara IceDogs and Plymouth Whalers each have six players listed in the rankings followed by the Kitchener Rangers and Oshawa Generals with five players each.

 

All 40 CHL players competing in the 2014 BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game on January 15 in Calgary, AB, appear in the Midterm Rankings including 32 of the top-60 skaters.  The top-ranked Bennett was originally named to the Team Orr roster but has been replaced due to recent injury. 

 

Last season, 159 CHL players appeared in the Midterm Rankings before 101 players from the CHL were selected in the 2013 NHL Draft including a record 22 players chosen in the first round.  37 of those players were from the OHL including eight first round picks.
