The opening frame of Game 3 gave the Bulldogs exactly what they wanted to open the road slate of the series. At 4:31, Jake O’Brien stole the puck from a Sudbury defender in the left circle and dealt the puck back to the blueline for an on-rushing Adam Jiricek who collected the puck just above the top of the right circle and rifled a shot over Paolo Frasca for his 1st of the playoffs and a 1-0 Bulldogs lead. Ryerson Leenders only faced a pair of shots in the opening period but made a brilliant save on the first one. With Jean-Cristoph Lemieux feeding across the Bulldogs crease to Adam Nemec, Ryerson Leenders went right to left to make a brilliant sliding glove save, taking away an open goal from Nemec for the second time in the last two-games. Nemec was taken off for his 2nd penalty of the opening frame at 18:29 after lifting the puck up and out of play. The Bulldogs cashed in on the man-advantage at 19:29 with Jake O’Brien knocking down a clearing attempt and sending it to the left circle for Adam Jiricek who hit Caleb Malhotra with a cross-crease dart to record the rookie’s 4th in 3 playoff games and a 2-0 lead going down the tunnel through 20-minutes.

The middle frame snowballed against the Bulldogs after Paolo Frasca denied an early Cooper Dennis look that appeared would fly into an open goal with his stick, the Wolves went on the front foot. Blake Clayton opened the scoring for the Wolves at 3:08 with a shot out of the left circle, that hit the top corner to pull the Wolves within a goal. The defecit was entirely erased at 10:31 on a near identical goal with Chase Coughlan firing a shot out of the left circle that Leenders got a piece of but not enough to guide aside tying the game 2-2. The Wolves tooko their first lead of the series at 13:39 when a Genc Ula point shot was deflected in front of Leenders by Chase Coughlan for his 2nd of the game to make it a 3-2 Wolves lead. The Bulldogs looked to fire back late in the frame with a series of chances in tight to Frasca’s goal but weren’t able to find the handle and hit the intermission in the unfamiliar position of trailing to the final 20.

The third period got worse for the Bulldogs before it got better, 4:41 into the period Artem Gonchar sent the puck off the left point towards the Bulldogs goal where it landed for Jean-Cristoph Lemieux to notch his 2nd of the post-season, giving the Wolves a 4-2 lead. Cue the comeback; on the power-play at 7:04, Caleb Malhotra switched off with Marek Vanacker on the right side, with Vanacker moving to the bottom of the circle and opening the lane for a crashing Adam Jiricek to fire in his 2nd of the game and pull the Bulldogs to within a goal at 4-3. Brantford went to a 5-on-3 late after Daniel Berehowsky tripped down Charlie Paquette on the rush and Genc Ula tossed the puck over the glass for a delay of game. With the two man-advantage, Adam Benak & Adam Jiricek combined on the left to feed Caleb Malhotra in the middle of the formation to rifle a shot past Paolo Frasca for his 2nd of the game & 5th of the playoffs knotting the game 4-4 at 15:15. The power-play wasn’t done and struck in the following 5-on-4 at 16:38. Adam Jiricek fed Caleb Malhotra at the top of the left-circle for a drive that was stopped but the rebound fell for Marek Vanacker to bang in his 2nd of the playoffs and give the Bulldogs a late 5-4 lead. The advantage wouldn’t hold, as at 19:10 with the puck bouncing through skates at the front of the Bulldogs net, Jan Chovan was able to get just enough to shovel over Ryerson Leenders for his 2nd of the playoffs tying the game 5-5 and forcing the game to overtime for the first time in the series.

In overtime, the Bulldogs took control from the opening drop and forced the pressure on Paolo Frasca’s goal, with an offensive zone cycle on, Marek Vanacker took a punch to the face from Gavin Ewles leading to a Bulldogs power-play. It was Vanacker himself to call game, the play began with Jake O’Brien sending Caleb Malhotra forward on the left, dropping for Marek Vanacker. Flying through the circle, Vanacker’s first shot was stopped but the OHL’s leading goal scorer scooped his own rebound and tossed it into the Sudbury goal for his 2nd of the game and a thrilling 6-5 overtime victory

The Brantford Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday night, April 2nd for Game 4 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with a chance to complete the sweep at the Sudbury Community Arena with a 7:05pm puck drop.

SUDBURY, ONTARIO. their first-round matchup with the Sudbury Wolves.

The Bulldogs looked to carry over the momentum from their 6-2 win in Game 1 and wasted no time doing just that. Brantford got on the board early, striking first on the man advantage to take a 1-0 lead at 4:46. Jake O’Brien set up Marek Vanacker, who quickly found Caleb Malhotra sneaking in backdoor, burying his 3rd of the playoffs past Wolves netminder Paolo Frasca. The Wolves looked to respond on the power play, but Ryerson Leenders shut the door, denying Jan Chovan to keep the Bulldogs in front. Brantford kept rolling and doubled their lead at 7:30, as a turnover sparked a rush the other way. Gabriel Frasca pushed up ice with Charlie Paquette, who fired the initial shot before the rebound kicked right out to Frasca, and he hammered home his 1st of the playoffs to make it 2-0. The Wolves looked to cut the lead in half as Hudson Martin fired a shot on goal, with Jan Chovan knocking it down to his forehand, but Ryerson Leenders came up with the stop. Sudbury would find their breakthrough late in the frame at 18:54 to cut the deficit to one. Artem Gonchar blasted a drive from the blue line, with Leenders kicking out the blocker to make the initial save, but the rebound found Jean-Cristoph Lemieux, who buried his 1st of the playoffs. The physicality carried over from Game 1, as Adam Jiricek laid a heavy hit on Rowan Henderson, sparking a sequence that saw Chase Coughlan take down Marek Vanacker, with Jake O’Brien stepping in to defend his teammate, resulting in a Wolves power play to start the middle frame. The Bulldogs head to the intermission holding a 2-1 lead, while the Wolves hold a slight 11-10 edge in shots.

The Wolves opened the middle frame on the man advantage, with Daniel Berehowsky getting a look, but Ryerson Leenders came up with the stop. A scary moment followed as Luca Testa and Jean-Cristoph Lemieux collided, with Testa heading down the tunnel as we hope he’s okay. The Bulldogs looked to restore their two-goal cushion as Nik Rossetto tried to connect with Philip Govedaris, but he couldn’t lift it over the blocker of Wolves netminder Paolo Frasca. The play sparked a scrum after the whistle, resulting in a Wolves power play, but the Bulldogs penalty kill stood tall. Brantford then headed to the man advantage, where Marek Vanacker tried to set up Adam Benak for a one-timer, but somehow the puck stayed out. Momentum shifted as Ben Danford was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for a check from behind, giving the Wolves a lengthy power play. Sudbury then earned a 5-on-3 for two minutes as Owen Protz was called for cross-checking. During the advantage, Berehowsky fired a shot that slipped through to Artem Gonchar, who tried to go backdoor but was denied twice by Leenders in tight. The Wolves would eventually break through at 13:37 to tie the game at two, as Hudson Martin set up Jan Chovan, who fired a shot past Leenders’ shoulder for his 1st of the playoffs. However, the Bulldogs wasted no time responding, regaining the lead at 15:08. Off a turnover, Caleb Malhotra found Cooper Dennis, who quickly set up Philip Govedaris on the doorstep, and he made no mistake, burying his 1st of the playoffs to make it 3-2. Dennis looked to extend the lead moments later with a long drive, but Frasca flashed the glove to keep it out. After 40 minutes of play, the Bulldogs head to the intermission holding a 3-2 lead over the Wolves.

The Wolves came out in the final frame pushing to even things up, as Rowan Henderson connected with Chase Coughlan on a chance, but Ryerson Leenders stood tall to make the stop. Brantford then headed to the man advantage, where Jake O’Brien looked to set up Marek Vanacker backdoor, but Wolves netminder Paolo Frasca came up with the save. The Bulldogs continued to press on another power play, with O’Brien getting a look, but Henderson stepped in with a big defensive block. Charlie Paquette tried to wrap one around the net, but Frasca got a piece of it to keep it out. Owen Protz followed up with a blast from the blue line, and Cooper Dennis jumped on the rebound, but Frasca shut the door once again. The Wolves pushed back with a dangerous chance as Adam Nemec broke in alone, but Leenders, down on the ice, stuck out the skate to make a huge stop. Jean-Cristoph Lemieux looked to drive the net moments later, but Zack Sandhu made a strong defensive play to deny the opportunity. Late in the frame, Sudbury pressed with the extra attacker, but it opened the door the other way. At 19:41, Jake O’Brien connected with Marek Vanacker, who fired it home to seal a 4-2 Bulldogs victory over the Sudbury Wolves.

The Brantford Bulldogs now have the opportunity to take a commanding 3-0 series lead as the series shifts to the Sudbury Community Arena for Game 3 on Tuesday, March 31st. journey Friday night, skating into a packed crowd at the TD Civic Centre as the Eastern Conference’s top seed played host to the 8th seed Sudbury Wolves in Game 1 of their first-round matchup.

The Wolves came out with early pressure, as Artem Gonchar looked to drive a chance up ice, but Adam Jiricek stepped in with a key defensive block. Going the other way, Caleb Malhotra tried to spark the crowd, firing a drive on goal, but Wolves netminder Paolo Frasca came up with the stop. The physicality began to build as Jiricek delivered a heavy hit on Blake Clayton, setting the tone early. Sudbury continued to push for the opening goal, with Jan Chovan driving a chance on net, but Ryerson Leenders turned it aside with a blocker save. Moments later, Owen Protz rushed into the zone with Adam Benak alongside him, electing to take the shot himself before the rebound popped out to Benak at the top of the crease, but Frasca denied him as well. The Bulldogs earned their first power play of the night and looked to capitalize, as Jake O’Brien connected with Benak, but Frasca got his stick across to disrupt a backdoor opportunity for Marek Vanacker. Brantford would break through at 15:01. After Charlie Paquette won the faceoff cleanly, the puck was worked back to Vladimir Dravecky, who found Cooper Dennis, and he fired a shot bar down to open the scoring with the Bulldogs’ first goal of the playoffs. Brantford kept the pressure on and doubled their lead at 18:44. Charlie Paquette set up Ben Danford at the point, who teed up a shot that Luca Testa redirected on the doorstep, lifting it over Frasca to make it 2-0. After 20 minutes of play, the Bulldogs headed to the intermission holding a 2-0 lead over the Sudbury Wolves, while also carrying a 12-5 advantage on the shot clock.

The Wolves looked to chip away at the Bulldogs lead early in the frame, as Blake Clayton came in with Chase Coughlan on a rush, but Owen Protz shut it down with a strong defensive play while Ryerson Leenders kicked the puck aside. Brantford pushed back the other way, with Jett Luchanko trying to set up Cooper Dennis but the chance was turned aside by netminder Frasca. The Bulldogs headed to the man advantage, where Sudbury created a shorthanded look with Henderson breaking in alone, but Leenders came up with the stop to keep the three-goal cushion intact. Brantford would make them pay shortly after, capitalizing at 3:58 to extend the lead to 3-0. Adam Benak fired a shot on goal, with Marek Vanacker battling to dig out the rebound and sliding it over to Caleb Malhotra, who made no mistake, slipping it past Frasca. Brantford continued to press on another power-play opportunity, and in the final moments, Edison Engle drove hard to the net but rang his attempt off the post as the Wolves managed to kill it off. Sudbury then went to their first power play of the night and found a response at 10:39. Artem Gonchar kept the puck in at the line and worked it over to Adam Nemec, who set up Daniel Berehowsky on the doorstep to finish and cut the lead to 3-1. The Wolves looked to build momentum with another opportunity, as Genc Ula generated a chance in close, but Leenders tracked it down and made the glove save to keep Brantford in control. The Wolves headed to the man advantage late in the frame, but the Bulldogs turned it into a shorthanded opportunity as Caleb Malhotra and Charlie Paquette broke out on a rush. Malhotra got a shot off, but Paolo Frasca came up with the stop to keep Sudbury within reach. After 40 minutes of play, the Bulldogs headed to the intermission holding a 3-1 lead over the Wolves.

Ben Danford looked to extend the Bulldogs lead early in the final frame, firing a long drive on goal, but Wolves netminder Paolo Frasca came up with another strong stop. Moments later, Jake O’Brien danced through the Sudbury zone and tried to connect with Marek Vanacker, but Frasca shut the door once again. Caleb Malhotra followed up with a drive of his own and chased down the rebound but was denied on the second effort. The Wolves cut into the lead at 8:01, as Jean-Cristoph Lemieux found Hudson Chitaroni on the doorstep, and he slipped it past Ryerson Leenders to make it a 3-2 game. Brantford looked to respond, with Adam Benak firing from the right circle, and the rebound bouncing out to Marek Vanacker in front, but Frasca came up with another key save. Moments later, Benak was awarded a penalty shot and made no mistake, wiring it top shelf over the shoulder of Frasca to restore the Bulldogs’ two-goal cushion. The Bulldogs pulled away late in the frame, adding another at 16:43. Caleb Malhotra rushed into the zone and snapped a shot top shelf for his second of the game, making it 5-2. Brantford wasn’t done there, striking again at 17:36, as Charlie Paquette wrapped the puck around and found Luca Testa, who buried his second of the night to seal a 6-2 victory. With the win, the Bulldogs take a 1-0 series lead over the Sudbury Wolves.

The Brantford Bulldogs will look to hold home ice on Sunday, March 29, when they host the Sudbury Wolves at the TD Civic Centre in Game 2 of this Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series. When asked about the team’s goals heading toward the playoffs, Vanacker expressed confidence in the group’s ability to compete at the highest level. “Honestly, I think if we put our minds to it and everyone plays their role, I think we’re capable of going all the way and it’s not a secret our goal is to win the Memorial Cup,” he said. “Everyone is just going to have to play their role and do their part and I think at the end of the day we can get there.”

That belief has grown stronger over the course of the season, especially in the months following the trade deadline in January. Vanacker points to the chemistry the Bulldogs have built as one of the team’s defining strengths. According to Vanacker, the group’s competitiveness and bond off the ice are what make them so dangerous heading into the postseason. “I think everyone on our team has so much heart and love for the game and love for our teammates and staff… that’s really going to carry us.”

Individually, Vanacker has taken a major step forward this season alongside the team’s overall success. The announcement came during a game, catching him by surprise. “Pretty cool, I wasn’t even really looking at the stats like that,” he admitted. “I’ve tried to be as consistent as I can, and it’s been working for me and especially our team.” For Vanacker, consistency has been key in his evolution from a promising rookie into a reliable leader for the Bulldogs.

Entering his 19-year-old season, Vanacker welcomed the expectations that came with a larger role on the team. He emphasized his desire to contribute not only through production but also through leadership. “I expected myself to have high production and be a leader on this team, on and off the ice,” he explained. “Personal goals as well, trying to become a better player and more mature player in the game.”

When comparing himself now to the player he was when he first entered the league, Vanacker believes his growth has come through becoming a more dependable player in all situations. “I think probably burying down on the puck,” he said. “Overall, just my whole game, adapting and maturing into a reliable, trusted player all over the ice. Even off the ice, just becoming a better person with a stronger work ethic and staying humble.”

Vanacker’s development has not gone unnoticed at the next level. In 2024, Vanacker heard his name called 27th overall in the first round of the NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, a moment he describes as unforgettable. “It was honestly pretty surreal. Every kid’s dream is to be drafted to the NHL and especially in the first round,” Vanacker said. “I was fortunate enough to get my name called and be a part of such a great organization, one of the original six. I was pretty shocked and just trying to take it all in as I walked to the stage. I kind of knew it was the start of something new and that I was going to give it my best shot.”

Arriving at development camp, having familiar faces such as Bulldogs teammates Nick Lardis and Parker Holmes helped make the experience easier. Vanacker reflected on how those connections helped him settle into the environment. “It was nice,” he said. “When you know someone and you go to a new place where you don’t know many guys, they kind of bring you along and help you learn. The Battalion looked to open the scoring early, as Kaden Pitre got a stick on a tip-in opportunity, but David Egorov came up with the stop. At the other end, the Bulldogs generated a chance of their own when Ben Danford fired a long drive from the blue line with Luca Testa stationed in front, but Jack Lisson turned that aside as well. Brantford kept pressing, with Marek Vanacker attempting to wire a shot over Lisson’s shoulder, but the North Bay netminder made the save. The play resulted in a post-whistle scrum, sending the Battalion to the power play. Jonathan Kapageridis looked to capitalize with a drive, but Egorov stood tall and flashed the glove to keep the game scoreless. The Bulldogs would then head to the man advantage and make it count. At 9:19, Adam Benak worked the puck to Caleb Malhotra, who found Adam Jiricek in the left circle. Jiricek then blasted home his 19th of the season to give Brantford a 1-0 lead. North Bay responded late in the frame. At 18:54, Ryder Carey set up Arseny Pronin, who hammered a shot past Egorov for his seventh of the season, sending both teams to the locker room deadlocked at 1-1.

The Battalion looked to take the lead early in the frame, as Sebastien Gervais found Jonathan Kapageridis for a long drive, but David Egorov came up with the glove save once again. Moments later, Caleb Malhotra sprung Cooper Dennis on a break, but Jack Lisson kicked out the blocker to keep the game tied. Brantford would capitalize on their next opportunity with the man advantage. At 4:25, Marek Vanacker connected with Jake O’Brien in the slot, and he picked the corner for his 27th of the season to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs continued to press, with Ben Danford teeing up a shot from the blue line, but Lisson got a piece of it with his stick to make the stop. North Bay responded at 11:19, evening the score at 2-2. Off a turnover, Kaden Pitre broke in alone and slipped a shot past David Egorov for his 18th of the season. However, the Bulldogs wasted little time regaining the lead. At 14:00, sustained pressure in the Battalion zone saw Adam Benak find Marek Vanacker out front, and he made no mistake, burying his 47th of the season to make it 3-2. Brantford struck again late in the period to extend their lead. At 19:21, despite being taken down on the play, Adam Benak managed to find the back of the net for his 28th of the season, sending the Bulldogs to the locker room with a 4-2 advantage.

The Bulldogs headed to the man advantage looking to extend their lead, and it appeared Luca Testa had done just that as he slipped one past Jack Lisson. However, the goal was waved off due to a cross-checking penalty, sending North Bay to the power play instead. The Battalion capitalized, cutting the deficit to one at 3:44. Parker Vaughn set up Cam Warren for a one-timer, and he made no mistake, scoring his sixth of the season to make it 4-3. North Bay kept the pressure on and quickly found the equalizer at 4:28. Evgeny Dubrovtsev fired an initial shot that David Egorov got a piece of, but the puck trickled through and across the line, tying the game 4-4. Brantford responded on the power play once again. At 7:03, Adam Benak connected with Caleb Malhotra, who found Jake O’Brien in open space. O’Brien hammered home his second of the game and 28th of the season to restore the Bulldogs’ lead at 5-4. The goal also marked O’Brien’s 254th career point, setting a new franchise record for all-time points leader. The Battalion pushed back with a man advantage of their own, but Egorov came up with a key glove save on a drive from Kent Greer. North Bay would eventually break through at 17:19 to tie the game 5-5, as Greer’s shot from the point was tipped in front by Nick Wellenreiter for his 23rd of the season. In the final moments, the Bulldogs pressed for the go-ahead goal. Adam Benak was denied on a one-timer, but moments later, Owen Protz stepped into a shot from the blue line and went bar down for his fifth of the season, giving Brantford a 6-5 lead at 18:21. North Bay pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker and continued to press, with Kaden Pitre generating a late chance, but Egorov kicked it aside. Nick Wellenreiter fired one final shot on goal, but Egorov stood tall to make the save and seal the victory. The Bulldogs closed out the night with a 6-5 victory, clinching the Hamilton Spectator Trophy as OHL regular season champions.

Brantford returns to action on Sunday, March 22, when they travel to the CAA Centre to take on the Brampton Steelheads in their final game of the regular season. Brantford Bulldogs returned to TD Civic Centre ice on Wednesday night with the opportunity to clinch both the East Division title and top seed in the Eastern Conference as they played host to the Niagara IceDogs.

Looking to spoil the opportunity, the Niagara IceDogs opened the scoring 2:23 into the first period with Ivan Galiyanov laying the puck to the front of the Brantford goal where Alexander Hage took a massive hit from Caleb Malhotra and knock the put into the Bulldogs goal for his 4th of the season to give the visitors the 1-0, mirroring the last meeting between the teams ten days earlier. The Bulldogs built momentum through the opening frame with Charlie Robertson playing a starring role, including an early 2-on-1 stop on a give and go from Caleb Malhotra & Cooper Dennis, keeping the IceDogs in the advantage until 17:56. Jake O’Brien forced a turnover on the end boards where Marek Vanacker followed to free up the puck and feed along to Adam Benak flashing around back of the goal and carrying into the left circle where he fed the middle of the line to Adam Jiricek who hammerd a one-timer to the net front where Marek Vanacker stationed up in front of Charlie Robertson tipping the puck for his 45th goal of the season knotting the game 1-1 into the intermission.

The middle frame remained knotted through the majority of the fame with Robertson again standing up for the IceDogs denying 16 Bulldogs shots in the period including a pair of point-blank opportunities from Zach Sandhu. After Ben Reisnecker was called for roughing on Luca Testa & Ivan Galiyanov was quickly whistled thereafter for slashing Adam Benak, the Bulldogs went to work in a 5-on-3 power-play. With the league’s top power-play in motion, Adam Benak caught the puck in the right circle and sent it back to the top of the formation to Jake O’Brien who carried into the top of the left circle baiting an IceDogs defender to drop before flashing a pass to the backdoor for Marek Vanacker who tapped in his 2nd of the game and league leading 46th of the season to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead at 17:39. Moments after the power-play ended, Luca Testa intercepted a pass in the IceDogs slot, turning and ringing a shot off the crossbar before Jake O’Brien nearly extended the lead with just seconds left in the middle frame out of the left circle firing a shot that rang off the far post, keeping the lead at 2-1 through 40-minutes.

In the final frame the Bulldogs continued the offensive pressure and extended the lead at 6:06. Adam Jiricek batted down an IceDogs clearing attempt at the middle of the Niagara line flying into the slot, dropping the puck to Jake O’Brien before the captain returned it to Jiricek at the side of the Niagara goal where the defenseman recorded his 18th of the season giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage. Not giving up on the night, the IceDogs battled back under two-minutes later as Ryerson Leenders left the puck behind the goal for Vladimir Dravecky to re-set the power-play only to have the puck bounce over the defenseman’s stick and right onto Hayden Reid hitting a wrap-around for 18th of the season to cut the lead to 3-2 at 8:01. The Bulldogs top offensive line pulled the goal right back at 10:23 with Jake O’Brien stealing a puck on the left half boards in the Niagara zone, quickly feeding into the left circle for Marek Vanacker who carried to the side of the crease before turning the puck to Adam Benak off the right post to record his 27th of the season making it a 4-2 game. With his assist on the Benak goal, Jake O’Brien recorded his 250th point of his career, becoming the 2nd Bulldog to ever cross that number, joining Patrick Thomas. As time wound down in the final frame, the IceDogs pulled Charlie Robertson to the bench to skate 6-on-4 and then 6-on-5 when, at 17:24, Owen Protz sent the puck around back of the goal to Adam Jiricek who rolled it through neutral ice and into the Niagara zone where Jake O’Brien galloped to the puck, held off Haoxi Wang, wrapped around behind the Niagara goal and hit the empty net for his 26 of the season finishing off a 5-2 lead that gave the Bulldogs their first back-to-back East Division Championship in franchise history and secured the top seed in the Eastern Conference and home ice through at least the first three rounds of the playoffs.

The Brantford Bulldogs will return to action for their final home game of the regular season on Friday night, March 20th hosting the North Bay Battalion at 7:00pm.

BRANTFORD, ON.
