Troops add defenceman
NORTH BAY, Ont. — The North Bay Battalion has acquired free-agent defenceman Trevor McDowell from the junior A Trenton Golden Hawks for a development fee, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Tuesday.
McDowell, a six-foot-four, 205-pound left shot, was a fourth-round pick by the Windsor Spitfires in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection from the Quinte Red Devils minor midgets, where he played with Battalion centre and right winger Dalyn Wakely.
McDowell, a Bancroft, Ont., product who turned 19 on July 31, had one goal and eight assists for nine points in 23 games this season with the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Golden Hawks.
In two-plus OPJHL seasons with the Brantford 99ers, Wellington Dukes and Trenton, he had one goal and 19 assists for 20 points in 131 games, with 36 penalty minutes.
General manager Adam Dennis said McDowell is expected to arrive in North Bay on Friday, practise with the team Saturday and make his OHL debut Sunday against the visiting Sudbury Wolves.
”Trevor is a defensive defenceman whom we followed quite closely in his minor midget season,“ said Dennis.
”As we look toward the second half, we felt this was an area of need and decided to take a different avenue to fill the void. He plays a smart, responsible game and uses his size and athleticism to keep his zone tidy.
”We look forward to welcoming him to our lineup this weekend.“
The Battalion plays host to the Peterborough Petes at 7 p.m. Thursday and visits the Soo Greyhounds on Friday night before facing Sudbury.
