OWEN SOUND, ON – The Owen Sound Attack are pleased to announce that 2026 first-round OHL Priority Selection pick Max Fransen has signed an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Hockey Club.

Selected eighth overall in the first round of the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, the 6-foot, 190-pound defenceman joins the Attack following an outstanding season with the Upper Canada College Blues U16 program. Fransen recorded 27 goals and 53 assists for a total of 80 points in 60 games during the 2025-26 season and added seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) in six games at the 2026 OHL Cup. He was ranked ninth on the OHL's Consensus Ontario Top-100 rankings heading into the Priority Selection.

"We are thrilled to officially welcome Max and his family to the Owen Sound Attack organization," said Attack President and General Manager Tyler Nother. "Max’s intelligence, leadership, and competitiveness are exactly what we look for in an Attack player, and we believe he has the potential to become a cornerstone defenceman for our hockey club.”

Fransen served as captain of the Upper Canada College Blues and established himself as one of the premier defencemen in his age group through his ability to drive play, contribute offensively, and excel in all situations.

"I am very excited to officially join the Owen Sound Attack. Being drafted by the organization was a special moment for me and my family and signing today is another important step in my hockey journey" said Fransen. "Owen Sound is a program that has done a very good job developing great players on and off the ice and I'm hoping to be one of those guys. The City of Owen Sound is an unreal place and I'm looking forward to getting to work with my teammates, learning from the coaches and staff, and contributing in any way I can."

Attack Head Coach Keenan Reynolds believes Fransen's skill set and character will make an immediate impact within the organization.

“Max is not only a talented hockey player and proven winner, but a high-character young man that we expect to be a leader and driver of the Attack’s culture for the foreseeable future” said Reynolds. “He possesses an elite hockey-IQ and an innate competitive drive that he uses to control games from the backend, and is most comfortable with the puck on his stick making plays to help his team win games.”

Fransen is the first member of the Attack's 2026 Priority Selection class to commit to the organization and will attend the club's upcoming development and training camps in preparation for the 2026-27 Ontario Hockey League season and will wear the number 43.

The Owen Sound Attack will begin their regular season on the road in Kitchener against the defending Memorial Cup Champions on Friday, September 18, as the Ontario Hockey League revealed the league's full 2026-27 schedule today. It’s a back-to-back home and home series with Kitchener to open the season, with the Rangers heading to the Bayshore for the Attack's home opener on Saturday, September 19.

The Attack's schedule includes 20 Saturday's, four Sunday's and 10 weeknight games.

In October, the first four of Owen Sound’s eight games will be played on the road; including a three game swing with Windsor Spitfires, Flint Firebirds, and Saginaw Sprit from the 16th through to the 18th. As well as the first game of the Attack’s rivalry series with Barrie at Sadlon Arena. The Attack will close out the month with a four game home-stand at the Bayshore, where they will take the ice against the London Knights, the Colts again to close out rivalry week, Sarnia Sting; in the teams School Day Game, and then a Saturday afternoon Halloween matchup with the Spitfires.

The Attack will play 11 games in the month of November with three of the four Saturday night games played at home. Starting on the road to face off against Sarnia, before heading across to this season’s Memorial Cup hosts in Guelph. Before heading home for a trio of games against Kitchener, Barrie, and Guelph at the Bear Den.

The Attack's Christmas break will be bookended with a pair of home games at the Bayshore, first Saturday, December 19 against the Sudbury Wolves, and Monday, December 28 against the Barrie Colts.

January’s home games will start with hosting divisional rivals Erie for the back-to-back games at the Bayshore, before heading down to the Erie Insurance Arena to play our second round of back-to-back games in February. The Attack’s February road trips will not end there as they will also take on the Eastern Division with games against Peterborough, Kingston and Ottawa from the 18th through to the 21st.

The team will end the regular season the same way they started it with a final matchup against the Kitchener Rangers at the Bayshore.

With the schedule now set, the Attack will begin booking suite nights in the coming weeks and will release a full promotional/specialty game schedule as well as new single game ticket packages, including a revamp flex pack prior to single game tickets going on sale just before training camp. Anyone wishing to become a new season ticket member or renew their season ticket membership are reminded that the deadline for this is July 31, 2026 and all tickets must be paid in full by this deadline.

The Owen Sound Attack made 17 selections at the 2026 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection presented by Real Canadian Superstore, over two days at Slush Puppie Place in Kingston. The Attack used their first round pick to select defensemen Max Fransen out of Upper Canada College on day 1, then opened day 2 by selecting centre Matthew Zilinski from the Mississauga Senators, Jace Voortman from the Toronto Jr Canadiens and Turner Stephenson Upper Canada College.

The Attack selected 10 forwards, five defensemen and two goalies with seven of these players coming from the GTHL, four from the OMHA, three from USA based programs and one from Hockey East Ontario.Included in the next wave of Attack prospects were three players with connections to the organization. Both the Attack's first round pick Max Fransen father Aaron and third round pick Turner Stephenson dad Dave played for the Platers/Attack during their time in the OHL, while Lucas Tout is from Kincardine and played for the Grey-Bruce Highlanders who play in the OMHA AAA loop in our area.

“We are really excited about our 2026 draft class. Our main priority was to address several positional needs, and we placed a strong emphasis on hockey IQ, compete level, and skill. We feel we accomplished that with our selections over the past two days,” said Attack President and General Manager Tyler Nother.

“We want to welcome our new prospects and their families into the Attack organization. We can’t wait to introduce them to our great fans and welcome them into the Owen Sound community at development camp in August.”

A total of 268 graduates utilized their OHL Scholarship in 2025-26, with teams investing more than $42 million since 2010.

TORONTO – The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) today announced that 268 graduates used their OHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions during the 2025-26 academic year. OHL member teams have contributed more than $42 million to the OHL Scholarship Program since 2010.

OHL graduates continued to compete at the game's highest levels this past season, with 148 skating in U SPORTS men's hockey and 78 opening the campaign on NCAA Division I rosters. An additional 18 accessed their OHL Scholarship while playing professionally.

Centrally administered through the OHL Office, OHL Scholarships are funded by OHL member teams. Every player who plays in the OHL is eligible to receive an OHL Scholarship. The OHL graduate can use their scholarship toward an undergraduate degree or diploma at any post-secondary institution worldwide or toward approved career-advancement programs.

In addition to alumni accessing their OHL Scholarship following graduation from the League, all current OHL players are encouraged to enrol in post-secondary courses with costs fully covered by OHL member teams. Team investment in scholarships accessed by current OHL players was more than $530,000 during the 2025-26 season.

"The OHL Scholarship Program has long been a hallmark of what the league is all about," said OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford. "Players have the opportunity to grow their game in the number one development league in the world, but that's really just the beginning. The education of our players is something that the league and its teams take great pride in as we continue to send players to both the National Hockey League, U SPORTS men's hockey programs and new this past season, the NCAA men's hockey circuit. The OHL remains committed to developing well-rounded individuals on and off the ice."

This year, 193 of the 268 OHL Scholarship recipients are furthering their education at Canadian universities. A total of 133 are attending Ontario-based universities, with the University of Guelph leading all post-secondary institutions at 13 OHL graduates enrolled in full-time studies, while 11 are enrolled at each of Queen's University, Toronto Metropolitan University and the University of Ottawa. A total of 60 OHL graduates are attending universities in Eastern Canada, led by the University of New Brunswick with 15.

A total of 19 OHL Scholarship recipients are attending Ontario-based colleges, with Fanshawe, Humber, Lambton, Loyalist and St. Lawrence College each featuring two alumni.

The OHL also recognized its top academic performers from the 2025-26 season at the OHL Awards Ceremony at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto last week.

Saginaw Spirit defenceman Levi Harper captured the Bobby Smith Trophy as Scholastic Player of the Year, posting a 93.2 per cent average while completing his high school requirements a full year early.

Barrie Colts forward Brad Gardiner earned the Roger Neilson Memorial Award as the OHL's Top Academic Post-Secondary Student, recording a 90 per cent average through American Public University.

Guelph Storm forward Mark Pape was named winner of the Ivan Tennant Memorial Award as the League's Top Academic High School Student after finishing with a 98.8 per cent average in his Grade 10 studies.

About the Ontario Hockey League
The Ontario Hockey League is a proud member of the Canadian Hockey League, which is the world's largest development hockey league with 61 teams in nine Canadian provinces and four American states. In addition to the OHL, the CHL is made up of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). The CHL supplies more players to the National Hockey League and U SPORTS than any other league.
