Plater Alum Scott Wray Tapped as Attack Head Coach
Owen Sound Attack General Manager Dale DeGray announced today the hiring of former Owen Sound Plater Scott Wray as the teams new Head Coach.
“This was very rewarding exercise to go through and we were overwhelmed by the interest with 45+ candidates applying. Throughout the entire process, i kept coming back to one interview and résumé, and that was Scott Wray” said Attack General Manager Dale DeGray when asked about the hiring process. “He checked a lot of boxes; his expectations of the team, how we need to play and his communication were paramount in the decision. Knowing that he is familiar with the city having played in Owen Sound, didn’t hurt either. Scott has a very good understanding of the make-up and expectations we have going into each season.”
“This is going to be a great fit, and it will be up to the two of us to put together the best staff we have ever had. After going to the conference finals, the last three seasons and being a major part of that coaching staff, I feel it’s only fitting he gets an opportunity to run his own bench and be a head coach in the OHL” added DeGray when asked about Wray’s experience. “I am extremely happy to provide him the opportunity to be the next coach of the Owen Sound Attack. We would like to welcome Scott and his wife Shanna and their family to Owen Sound.”
Wray joins the Attack as the team’s 17th Head Coach in franchise history, having spent the past eight seasons as an Assistant Coach with the North Bay Battalion, where he was a major part of the coaching staff that saw the Battalion reach the conference finals the past three seasons. Prior to this he spent three seasons as the Head Coach of the Powassan Voodoos, leading them to a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League title in 2016-17, in just their third year of existence.
Originally a fourth-round pick, 55th overall by the Owen Sound Platers in the 1996 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, Wray played 21 games in the Scenic City, tallying 3 goals and 1 assist before being traded to the North Bay Centennials in the middle of his first season. Wray went on to play another 158 OHL games with the Centennials and the Plymouth Whalers, finishing with 41 career goals and 49 career assists.
After completing his OHL career at the end of the 1999-00 season, Wray went on to play in six professional leagues including the ECHL, WPHL (Western Professional Hockey League), CHL (Central Hockey League), BNL (British National League), EIHL (Elite Ice Hockey League), UHL (Untied Hockey League), before retiring after the 2013-14 season, his fifth with the South Dakota-based Rapid City Rush.
Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Wray played in 692 Central Hockey League regular season games, which is believed to be a league record, tallying 287 goals, 302 assists, 589 points and 838 penally minutes. In 2010, he scored the title clinching goal for Rapid City in Game 6 of the President’s Cup final against the Allen Americans.
“I’m really excited, its a privilege to be here. It’s such an exciting moment for my family and I” Wray said. “It’s really come full circle for me, I started my junior career here (Owen Sound) and I went to North Bay, I’ve been in North ay for 7 years and now I’m back here to coach.”
Scott and his wife Shanna plan to move to the Scenic city.
