Attack subtract 67’s from the Bayshore, 3-1 Win
The Owen Sound Attack started off the weekend by hosting the Ottawa 67’s on Saturday afternoon in what turned into an intense matchup between the two teams who are battling for playoff positioning in their respective conferences. Fans treated to a matchup with lots of physical play and very little breathing room at both ends and an Attack hard-fought victory 3-1 victory over the 67’s. Declan Waddick opened up the scoring for the Attack in the first, James Petrovski potting his first goal of the season in the 2nd, and Landen Hookey with his 20th goal of the season to seal the deal for the Attack on the empty net. Carter George was also a key part of the Attack’s win making 30 saves. Luca Pinelli had the lone goal for the 67’s.
The first period set the tone for the rest of the game with both teams seeing limited scoring opportunities, with players sacrificing their bodies to block shots and make physical plays along the boards. Both goalies stood tall in the first period, not letting any easy ones get by one another. The Attack had a brilliant two-on-one scoring opportunity where Zurawski made a nifty pass to the slot to McDonald, who seemed to have all of the momentum in the world but got robbed by the blocker of Mackenzie. The Attack kept fighting as they were dominating the period in the shot department and were rewarded when Zurawski gained the zone with speed and was able to find Declan Waddick on the left side of the crease for a beautiful goal to give the Bears a one-goal advantage.
The second period was more of the same, but the intensity spill over into penalty trouble for both for teams. The Bears got off on the right foot in this period, increased their lead just 38 seconds into the period. Jake Crawford held the blueline and regained possession of the puck, creating space for himself to sneak into the right-hand slot and slide it over to James Petrovski, throwing the monkey off his back to earn his first goal of the season and making the score 2-0. The intensity began to rise in the Bayshore as the physical play kept on ramping up as time continued in this game. The Ice opened up for both teams as we got to see four-on-four action twice in this period, but with the number of blocked shots and strong defensive play we saw from both teams, neither led to a goal.
Luca Pinelli cut the Attack in half just three minutes into the third period when he was able to sneak in between the hash marks to receive a pass from behind the net, catching the Attack’s defence off guard to make this a one-goal game. It was evident that both teams were hungry to walk out of the Bayshore with a win, but the Bears were not going to let this one slip away. With key saves from Carter George throughout the third period to keep his team in it, the defence started to ramp up once again, leading to many scrums after the whistle. The Attack kept clawing away at any opportunity to put this game to rest and they finally did when with the 67’s net empty the Attack’s defence focused in on the 67’s offence allowing Declan Waddick to create a turnover for none other than Captain Landen Hookey who put the puck in the back of the empty net from center ice, sealing the deal for the Attack with a 3-1 win over the 67’s.
