Attack Stifled by Spitfires in 4-1 Loss
The Owen Sound Attack fought hard against the Windsor Spitfires at the WFCU Monday afternoon, but would ultimately fall short in a 4-1 loss. Alec Leonard scored the lone goal for the Bears, his second of the season, first with the Attack, while Carter George had 35 saves in the loss. Noah Morneau, Ilya Protas, Jean-Christoph Lemieux and Liam Greentree had goals for the Spitfires.
The first period set the tone for a tightly contested affair this afternoon. Windsor got themselves on the board first after a strong effort from Cole Davis stopped the Attack’s clearing attempt. Davis then slid the puck behind him to his defensemen Carson Woodal, setting up a quick give and go between the two. Davis then used the room in front of him to fire the puck at George and crashing the net hard was Lemuiex who put in the Spitfires first goal of the game only a minute and twenty seconds into the game. The Attack’s defense reacted quickly and tightened up, not allowing any easy chances for the Spitfires for the remainder of the first period.
The Spitfires extended their lead eight minutes into the second period, when Morneau took a quick shot off the cycle that eluded George for his 22nd of the season and a 2-0 Spitfires lead. The Attack were able to cut the deficit in half with just over two minutes remaining in the period. Bruce McDonald won the draw towards the boards, Cole Zurawski’s quick reaction would win the puck battle for Owen Sound. Noticing Leonard all alone on the point, Zurawski drop passed the puck to the point. Leonard then quickly slid down the left side of the boards and fired a laser of a shot past Joey Costanzo bar down.
The final 20 minutes of the game showcased limited scoring opportunities. The Attack continued to execute great tight passing plays, trying to open up the net but unfortunately couldn’t get the puck past Costanzo. Greentree, potted the insurance goal with four minutes left in the period off a breakaway snipe. The Attack pulled goaltender George in a hoping effort to claw back into the game, but an empty net goal made the final 4-1.
