[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]You may not know the name, but if you\u2019ve been around TD Place long enough, you\u2019ll recognize the face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul ‘Preach’ Huggins has been a constant at the arena over the past two decades, wearing his trademark flat cap and high-spirited demeanor, from morning practices to game days, when he sticks around until after the final buzzer.<\/span><\/p>\n

While he provides morale boosts through his spirited demeanour and great storytelling, Huggins also provides the team with a unique service as the team\u2019s chaplain.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 67\u2019s are one of a handful of OHL teams to officially provide spiritual guidance, including the Niagara IceDogs, Owen Sound Attack, Oshawa Generals, Peterborough Petes, Sarnia Sting, Sudbury Wolves, and Windsor Spitfires.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the team\u2019s chaplain, he leads weekly bible study sessions after Thursday practices in the video room.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll look at a concept, an idea, some aspect that we can have a conversation about and provide a framework, vision and perspective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019ll also meet individually with players for prayer time, connections and situations, or just advice.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Preach\u2019s faith had always been present in his life, it was with the Carleton Ravens where faith and sport had truly married.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was playing football (at Carleton), and that\u2019s where the proverbial penny dropped,\u201d he said. \u201cThese two really go hand-in-hand and play well together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It was there that he first got involved with Athletes in Action, a non-profit. \u201cThey kinda illuminated the faith and sport aspect and combination,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Huggins joined the organization in the 2005-06 season off a recommendation from Brian Patafie, the team\u2019s equipment manager and head athletic therapist at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI met with (Brian Kilrea), had that first meeting with him, and so the rest, as they say, is history,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was that season where Huggins got his infamous nickname \u2018Preach\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPatafie came and saw me preach one Sunday, so he started introducing me to different people like \u2018Hey, have you met the preacher?\u2019,\u201d he said. \u201cTherefore, the guys just went from Preacher to Preach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some players on the team that do not know my real name and just refer to me as Preach,\u201d he laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a former athlete, Huggins knows the role that superstitions play in athletics, especially as the stakes get higher and players want to control all the controllables.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was joking with a few people about this last week, with what clothes they put on in what order,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality is that athletes want to feel comfortable,\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes, there are things they look for to provide comfort that aren\u2019t necessarily meant to provide them comfort.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo for us in our chapel times, we try to look at a nebulous idea to a more concrete reality,\u201d he said. \u201cTrying to give them a bit more grounding, not to feed superstitions, but to have them go into every game thinking: \u201cI feel good because of the different things I\u2019ve incorporated into my life.\u201d\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

With hockey growing past its roots and into newer communities, it\u2019s allowed for players of different backgrounds and faiths to grace the ice from youth hockey and all the way up the ranks to the 67\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Preach\u2019s backgrounds and teachings stem from his Christian roots, he\u2019s still present to provide that guidance even to players grounded by different faiths or moral backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFaith has many components to it, and manifests itself in many different ways,\u201d he said. \u201cDefinitely, I present things from a Christian perspective, but also I absolutely respect anyone who has a different faith or perspective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI firmly believe all truth is God\u2019s truth, whether you recognize it as God as I recognize it as God, or something else, it\u2019s still true,\u201d he said. \u201cIn each and every conversation, you find the common ground, and that\u2019s the one reality we can do with more of in our society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside the 67\u2019s, Huggins has continued his services with the Ottawa Redblacks since their inaugural season in 2013, where he also hosts weekly bible meetings as well as pre-game chapel and post-game prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compared to the RedBlacks, where it\u2019s much more serious, dealing with advice on wives and children, he appreciates the levity of working with the young Barber Poles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn all honesty, I laugh a lot more down here,\u201d he joked. \u201cJust because there\u2019s a lot more things to laugh at and with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, there\u2019s a lot of similarities between dealing with the two groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAthletes are athletes,\u201d he said. \u201cThe things that they struggle with, and the situations and realities that they face are very similar and consistent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing I take great comfort in is the conversations I have outside of my official times,\u201d he said. \u201cI tell people I live for the lightbulb moments; Someone will stand in the hallway for 20 minutes to a half-hour and all of a sudden some aspect comes up they never would have shared before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the off-season, Huggins tries to keep the connection alive, keeping his line open for players who need help or advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think back to the COVID years, we ran a Bible Study throughout the entire off-season on Zoom, because guys wanted to be engaged and stay connected,\u201d he said. \u201cThis past off-season I\u2019ve engaged with five or six different players via email and text.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That willingness to maintain those connections also extends to alumni, with Preach keeping a line throughout the year with former 67\u2019s greats like Logan Couture, Jake Middleton and Petr Mrazek, and has even done players’ weddings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Going into his 21st season around the team, Huggins is excited to reunite with the players he\u2019s kept in touch with and to pick up where he left off with those he hasn\u2019t seen in a while.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI walk into every year full of anticipation and expectations but with open hands, because I don\u2019t necessarily know who the players are that are gonna come in, where players are going to be at, or whether they will want to continue to engage,\u201d he said. \u201cI am super blessed by the guys who come and want to look into the Bible and what it says and what it might have for them,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]OTTAWA\u00a0–\u00a0<\/strong>Hockey Canada announced today that Ottawa 67\u2019s forward Brock Chitaroni has been selected to attend Canada\u2019s National Men\u2019s Summer Under-18 Team training camp ahead of the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.<\/p>\n

Chitaroni, 17, was selected third overall by the Ottawa 67\u2019s in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection. In his rookie OHL season, the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, native appeared in 60 regular-season games, recording 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points, and added eight playoff appearances. Internationally, Chitaroni represented Team Canada White at the 2025 U17 World Challenge, appearing in five games, tallying three goals and three assists for six points.\u00a0Prior to joining the 67\u2019s, he starred with the Barrie Colts U16 AAA program, where he tallied 29 goals and 30 assists in 31 games.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s National Men\u2019s Summer Under-18 Team training camp will run from July 27 to Aug. 1 at NAIT Arena and Rogers Place in Edmonton. The camp will feature daily practices and exhibition games against Sweden on July 30 and Czechia on Aug. 1, before the final roster is selected for the tournament.<\/p>\n

The 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup begins on Aug. 3, with Canada opening the tournament against Switzerland at 5:00 p.m. MT. Canada will also face Slovakia on Aug. 4 and Sweden on Aug. 5 in preliminary-round action before the tournament concludes with the medal games on Aug. 8.<\/p>\n

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]OTTAWA\u00a0–<\/strong>\u00a0The Ottawa 67\u2019s announced today that goaltender Noah La Gambina has signed an Ontario Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement with the club.<\/p>\n

“Noah is an athletic and highly competitive goaltender,” said Ottawa 67\u2019s General Manager Jan Egert. “He was a key member of the Don Mills Flyers’ 2024\u201325 GTHL Championship team before continuing his journey at St. Andrew’s College. Through both organizations, Noah has continued to grow under the tutelage of each program. We’re excited he has chosen to take the next step in his development path with the 67’s.”<\/p>\n

The Richmond Hill, Ontario native was selected by Ottawa in the fifth round (98th overall) of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection. La Gambina made his first OHL appearance during the 2025-26 season, dressing as Jaeden Nelson’s backup against the Oshawa Generals. At St. Andrew’s College U18 AAA last season, the 16-year-old appeared in 24 games, posting a 17-7-0 record, a 2.44 goals-against average, a .908 save percentage and two shutouts.<\/p>\n

“I am very happy to have both Norm and Paul back on our coaching staff,” said Ottawa 67\u2019s Head Coach Dave Cameron. “Norm\u2019s experience and understanding of the game are invaluable. He\u2019s become one of the most respected coaches in the OHL and brings a wealth of knowledge to our group. Paul offers a fresh perspective, and his personable, detail-oriented approach has made a significant impact on our players\u2019 development. Together, they are outstanding members of our staff.”<\/p>\n

Milley<\/strong>, 46, is set to begin his ninth season with the Ottawa 67\u2019s, having joined the organization in 2017 as part of Andr\u00e9 Tourigny’s coaching staff. Since then, the Toronto native has helped lead the team to an OHL Championship Series appearance in 2019 and three Hamilton Spectator Trophy titles alongside Tourigny and current Head Coach Dave Cameron.<\/p>\n

Before turning to coaching, Milley had a distinguished playing career. As a standout with the Sudbury Wolves, he collected multiple CHL and OHL honours before being selected 37th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1998 NHL Draft. Milley went on to play for Buffalo and the Tampa Bay Lightning and enjoyed a strong career in the American Hockey League. He concluded his playing days in Germany\u2019s DEL, earning several league honours, including leading the league in assists and points. On the international stage, Milley has represented Canada as both a player and a coach.<\/p>\n

Stoykewych<\/strong>, 31, joined Cameron\u2019s coaching staff ahead of the 2023-24 season and is entering his fourth year with the organization. Previously, the Winnipeg native spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men\u2019s hockey program. Before that, he served as a skills development coach and program coordinator at Manitoba\u2019s RINK Training Centre and as an assistant coach with the Western Mustangs during the 2019-20 season.<\/p>\n

As a player, Stoykewych played for the Western Michigan University Broncos from 2014 to 2018, tallying 23 points over 82 NCAA games. Prior to his collegiate career, he represented Canada West at the 2012 and 2013 World Junior A Challenge, as well as the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.<\/p>\n

Milley and Stoykewych will return alongside reigning OHL Coach of the Year Dave Cameron as the 67\u2019s open their preseason schedule on August 30 against the Kingston Frontenacs at Slush Puppie Place. Ottawa begins the 2026-27 regular season in Kingston on September 20, before hosting the Sarnia Sting in their home opener at The Arena at TD Place on September 27 at 3:00 p.m.<\/p>\n

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]While every season it\u2019s the goal of each Ontario Hockey League franchise to win a championship, the OHL is first and foremost a developmental league.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether that\u2019s academically, as people, and of course on the ice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of the 20 players who suit up in the Barber Pole jersey on a given night, the Ottawa 67\u2019s have an immense support staff in both front-facing and behind-the-scenes roles to get them ready every single day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of those people is Damien Sutherland, Lead Performance Coach with the Canadian Strength Institute, which has been partnered with the Ottawa 67\u2019s since 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While working in strength and conditioning naturally means plenty of resistance training, on game days Sutherland is also one of the team\u2019s heartbeats\u2014and as a strength coach, he knows the heart is a muscle, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s just one of the many unofficial responsibilities he\u2019s taken on around the team.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDuring those game days, I\u2019m in the circle with them, getting them hyped up, getting \u2018em going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

One of his other responsibilities is making the team\u2019s \u2018Liquid Legs\u2019 ready, CSI\u2019s electrolyte drink formula.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaking sure their hydration is good, their spirits high, that way, regardless of their headspace, I always try to uplift them and make sure we’re in a mindset where we\u2019re ready to go in and win that game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sutherland took on the role this past season after joining the CSI and working around the team in a limited capacity three seasons ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI got into training pretty young; I always played sports growing up, and training was the part that I gravitated towards even at an early age,\u201d said Sutherland. \u201cComing out of high school, it wasn\u2019t necessarily the path I thought I was going to take, but a little bit later in life, I decided to go back to school and started to study in the field and got lucky enough to land an internship here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

During that internship, he met Sean Young, the founder of Canadian Strength Institute, who had worked with the Redblacks and the Ottawa 67\u2019s through CSI as the former Head of Athlete Performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite having several cousins who played in junior and professional hockey, including Bryan Young and Michael Swift, both of whom represented Team Korea at the 2018 Olympics, Sean comes from a track-and-field background. However, he too had his own Olympic journey, trialling for the 800m in 2008 and 2012, serving as a guide runner for Paralympian Jason Dunkerley.<\/span><\/p>\n

Young has since trained Team Canada at the World Championships and the 2026 Olympics and joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as a member of their strength and conditioning staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In that respect, both Young and Sutherland share a similar background.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s pretty funny, actually; hockey was never my main sport; I\u2019d actually say I\u2019m a pretty poor hockey player, myself,\u201d Sutherland jests. \u201cHockey has always been a part of my family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy father and my grandfather worked in hockey equipment sales for the better part of their lives,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s always been something that\u2019s been close to my family, but not my personal sport of preference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In some respects, both Young and Sutherland share a parallel background, with hockey being present in the background before ultimately coming around to it through their work in strength and conditioning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo getting into this industry, it was a little bit of re-learning the culture, getting accustomed to the way that guys talk and act with each other,\u201d he said. \u201cAt the end of the day, training is training; it was easy to integrate into.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest thing I had to wrap my head around was that at the end of the day, the OHL is a developmental league,\u201d he said. \u201cSo you have a lot of guys coming in with not a huge base and not a lot of athletic experience when it comes to lifting weights.\u201d<\/span>For CSI, they\u2019ve found success with a “rip-the-bandage-off” approach to helping young athletes take that next step.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSean and I\u2019s approach is very much: go hard in the beginning, give them a rough time starting off,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you show a young athlete what training like a pro should be like, they\u2019re going to get a lot more accustomed to it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEspecially having a mentor like Sean to teach me how he\u2019s worked with some of the great hockey players who have come through this facility,\u201d he said. \u201cI was able to learn ways to not only maintain a player throughout a season but actually grow them going into their next years, so that they\u2019ll be better and stronger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of that training involves adapting lifting routines to the player\u2019s seasons, a practice known as periodization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s gonna be periods where you are going to be able to up the volume and push the guys a little harder, schedule dependent,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe off-season, funnily enough, feels like the on-season for a strength coach,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have all of our off-season training, some local guys that come in for that programming, but also checking in with guys to make sure they are on the right path to succeed when they get to training camp.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost every week we’re doing a Zoom call with our team; all the coaches get together, and we talk about mental performance,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really good to get everyone together and still feel like a team, even if everyone is in different parts of Ontario or even further out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the preseason, the guys are coming fresh; they\u2019ve done a full offseason; they are ready to go and continue to build.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs you go through the season, you\u2019re looking at injury management: how do I make sure this player who is getting 25-minutes a night is able to play a three-game weekend and continue on?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Load management becomes even more important as the season wears on and the games get even more important.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cComing into the playoffs, how do I make sure my team is still strong but has the energy to go through rounds and rounds and make that push?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For Sutherland, getting to work with younger athletes and getting them closer to reaching their athletic potential has been the most fulfilling aspect of his time with CSI and around the 67\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with younger athletes is super gratifying,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can see the work that\u2019s being put in, and as they begin to age into the league and new opportunities arrive, whether being drafted or moving onto a pro career, you can take a lot of pride in that you were a part of that stepping stone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPersonally, I\u2019m just happy to be working with the 67\u2019s,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve been an Ottawa native my entire life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a kid, I remember going to some of those school games growing up,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re there, and it looks so grandiose; you can\u2019t even fathom the idea of being in their position.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Barber Poles open their preseason on the road against the Kingston Frontenacs on\u00a0Sunday, August 30, with puck drop set for\u00a02:00 p.m.\u00a0They will face Kingston once again on\u00a0Friday, September 4, at\u00a07:00 p.m.\u00a0at the Ed Lumley Arena in the Cornwall Civic Complex before wrapping up exhibition play on\u00a0Saturday, September 5, when they host the Peterborough Petes at\u00a04:00 p.m.\u00a0at Bert Hall Arena in Arnprior.<\/p>\n

The 67\u2019s return a strong core from last season, highlighted by 2026 NHL Draft picks Spencer Bowes (New York Rangers) and Ondrej Ruml (Colorado Avalanche). Veterans Nic Whitehead and 2027 NHL Draft prospect Kohyn Eshkawkogan are also set to return, while Brock Chitaroni enters his second OHL season after being selected third overall in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection.<\/p>\n

Ottawa will also feature a few new faces, including forward Jaiden Newton, who was acquired from the Barrie Colts earlier this offseason.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s a big body, a former captain, has pro experience, is a two-time champion, an NHL draft pick, and now a member of the Ottawa 67\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 67\u2019s selected the Tampere, FIN, right winger with the 52nd overall pick in the 2026 CHL Import Draft. At 6-foot-4, he\u2019d be amongst the team\u2019s tallest players on last year\u2019s squad, only surpassed by Zach Houben and David Bedkowski, who both stand at 6-foot-6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vanhatalo, 18, is coming off a 19-point season with Tappara\u2019s Under-20 system, where he scored 10 goals and nine assists over 38 regular-season games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The youngster would suit up for eight games and net an assist with the men\u2019s team, Tappara Tampere, which is partly owned by fellow Tampere-born hockey player Aleksander Barkov, the captain of the Florida Panthers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019d return to the Under-20 circuit for the playoffs, leading his team in points with 12 across 13 games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His strong play in the back half of the season would place him 79th in EliteProspects\u2019 2026 NHL Draft Guide. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe has the ideal power forward frame combined with projectable quickness and footspeed, along with a powerful shot that uses from every distance.\u201d – EliteProspects Draft Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With pick No. 168, Vanhatalo would fall into the paws of the Panthers, joining Barkov.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the connection to Barkov, he said at the NHL draft that he models his game after Matthew Knies of the Toronto Maple Leafs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe is a power forward just like me. He has a good shot and a lot of scoring skills. He is a good role model for me,\u201d <\/span>he said to Teemu Suvinen of Ilta-Sanomat<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The hockey connections are strong in the Vanhatalo family, with two older brothers active in the sport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lassi, 28, is his biggest role model. The 6-foot-7 winger has been a longtime pro in Finland, with the 6-foot-7 winger suiting up in 260 games across nine seasons in Liiga, even serving as an assistant captain for Vaasan Sport in 2022-23.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miika, 30, has been much more hands-on with Vilho\u2019s development, having coached him at the Under-16 and Under-18 levels. He head-coached Tappara\u2019s Under-16 team, which Vilho would later captain, to a league title before both moved to the Under-18 squad, with Miika joining the championship-winning team as an assistant coach in 2024-25.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That season, Vilho led the Finnish Under-18 league in goals with 37 across just 41 games, while scoring 10 goals in 12 games in the playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]OTTAWA \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Ottawa 67\u2019s forward Filip Ekberg has been selected to represent Sweden at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase, taking place from July 26-Aug. 1 in Windsor, ON.<\/p>\n

Ekberg, 19, has registered 91 points in 112 games over his two seasons with the Barber Poles (2024-26), including 24 goals and 46 points in 59 games last season. The Uppsala, Sweden native has suited up for Sweden on various occasions, including posting 10 goals and 18 points in seven games at the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championships.<\/p>\n

The World Junior Summer Showcase consists of ten games \u2013 featuring World Junior hopefuls from Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States. The non-tournament format is used by each federation as the first evaluation period ahead of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.<\/p>\n

Vanhatalo was selected by the Florida Panthers in the sixth round, 168th overall, in last week’s 2026 NHL Draft. The Tampere, Finland native played eight games last season in Liiga with Tappara, registering one assist. He also suited up in 38 games with Tappara U20, posting 10 goals and 19 points last season. Vanhatalo also spent time with Finland\u2019s U18 club at the 2026 IIHF World U18 Championships, where he registered one goal in five contests.<\/p>\n

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The 2026 OHL Priority Selection on Friday night proved to be a special night, returning to an in-person setting for the first time since 2000. For Belleville-born, Kingston-raised Andrew Laurin, the night was even more special, getting the call by the Ottawa 67\u2019s as their 18th overall selection.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a dream come true,\u201d said Laurin. \u201cEspecially to be done in my hometown, it means a lot to my family and I.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Laurin was joined by several family members, including his brother, his grandmother, and her friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have to thank all my family, coaches, trainers, advisors; I wouldn\u2019t be here without all of them,\u201d said Laurin. \u201cI want to shout out my parents, but especially my younger brother Blake,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Blake is following his older brother\u2019s path, as he\u2019s a goaltender within the Quinte Red Devils U13 AAA squad. \u201cHe\u2019s pushed me every day to get better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to thank them for all their sacrifices and help along the way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the draft process, it seemed like fate that the Ottawa 67\u2019s were going to land Andrew Laurin.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCertain players jump out at you a bit earlier with their playing style and the DNA of what we look for; he was on our radar at the Toronto Titans Tournament sometime in September,\u201d said General Manager Jan Egert. \u201cAt that point, you have no idea what the draft looks like or where you\u2019re going to select, but Andrew became a player of priority for us very early.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI had an interview with Ottawa earlier in the year, and I thought it went really well, but it was my first one, so I didn\u2019t really know how to gauge it,\u201d he said. \u201cMy progression this season was one of the big things I talked with Mr. Egert about; that\u2019s what gave me that feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The right winger registered 51 points across 34 games with the Quinte Red Devils U16 AAA in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association U16 AAA.<\/span><\/p>\n

Laurin familiarized himself with the 67\u2019s over the course of the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI followed a lot of 67\u2019s games this season,\u201d he said. \u201cI came to the Slush Puppie Place for the playoffs this past year, watching those games and how they handled business.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard of this,\u201d said Egert with a smile. \u201cI didn\u2019t ask which team he rooted for at that point, though I might put him on the spot later on.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was Egert\u2019s first year running the draft as the team\u2019s general manager, and while you\u2019d want to make the right pick every year, there\u2019s no doubt a bit more at stake in getting this one right. \u201cAs we worked through the process, we quite often came back to the name Andrew Laurin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Laurin would pick up the pace late-season, with five points in four games at the OHL Cup and 12 points over eight games in the OMHA U16 playoffs. Yet it was after meeting his family that he shifted from being a player of priority for the 67’s to the team\u2019s target.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI spent an hour with them, and I got a sense that the human values are aligned with us as well,\u201d said Egert. \u201cThe ambition, the passion, and the mentality of the young athlete made him a fit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, while there was a fit between the player and the personality, an underlying connection was discovered during the process.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents used to live in Ottawa before they moved to Kingston, so I\u2019ve heard stories about the city,\u201d said Laurin, who grew up in Kingston. That connection would prove to be two-fold, as long before Egert was with the 67\u2019s, Egert spent some time growing up in Westport, Ontario, a small town around 45 minutes away from Kingston.<\/span><\/p>\n

Laurin describes himself as a \u2018smart, physical player who can be relied upon in big moments\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI thrive under pressure,\u201d he added. \u201cOnce you get to know me, I hope you\u2019ll know I have character and play with passion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What Laurin thinks his x-factor is his physicality, \u201cthat\u2019s what brings my game to life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, it is no surprise that Laurin says he models his game after physical power forwards Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s their leadership on the ice, the way they carry themself each and every shift,\u201d he said. \u201cTwo guys who bring energy to the game by their physicality and size, and they also score in the big moments and live up to the hype and higher-pressure situations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As for playing in Ottawa, Laurin can\u2019t wait to get started.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe work starts now,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s super exciting to see what the team was last year, and what it\u2019s only going to become.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know it\u2019s a first-class organization and an amazing city to be in,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve heard nothing but great things, and I am super excited to get there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m super honoured to be under (Dave Cameron)\u2019s wing,\u201d he said. \u201cI expect him to hold me accountable\u2026 whatever he thinks I need to work on, I\u2019ll do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think my skating could always use improvement,\u201d he said of the one area he thinks he could develop the most. \u201cI think specifically, my first three steps and stride could get quicker, and if they get quicker, I\u2019ll be able to use my skillset to create more opportunities in the offensive zone for my teammates and I.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For now, he\u2019s keeping his plan for the next step on his OHL journey simple and straightforward.<\/span><\/p>\n
