For Belleville-born, Kingston-raised Andrew Laurin, the night was even more special, getting the call by the Ottawa 67\u2019s as their 18th overall selection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s a dream come true,\u201d said Laurin. \u201cEspecially to be done in my hometown, it means a lot to my family and I.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laurin was joined by several family members, including his brother, his grandmother, and her friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI have to thank all my family, coaches, trainers, advisors; I wouldn\u2019t be here without all of them,\u201d said Laurin. \u201cI want to shout out my parents, but especially my younger brother Blake,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blake is following his older brother\u2019s path, as he\u2019s a goaltender within the Quinte Red Devils U13 AAA squad. \u201cHe\u2019s pushed me every day to get better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI just want to thank them for all their sacrifices and help along the way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the draft process, it seemed like fate that the Ottawa 67\u2019s were going to land Andrew Laurin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCertain players jump out at you a bit earlier with their playing style and the DNA of what we look for; he was on our radar at the Toronto Titans Tournament sometime in September,\u201d said General Manager Jan Egert. \u201cAt that point, you have no idea what the draft looks like or where you\u2019re going to select, but Andrew became a player of priority for us very early.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI had an interview with Ottawa earlier in the year, and I thought it went really well, but it was my first one, so I didn\u2019t really know how to gauge it,\u201d he said. \u201cMy progression this season was one of the big things I talked with Mr. Egert about; that\u2019s what gave me that feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The right winger registered 51 points across 34 games with the Quinte Red Devils U16 AAA in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association U16 AAA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Laurin familiarized himself with the 67\u2019s over the course of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI followed a lot of 67\u2019s games this season,\u201d he said. \u201cI came to the Slush Puppie Place for the playoffs this past year, watching those games and how they handled business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard of this,\u201d said Egert with a smile. \u201cI didn\u2019t ask which team he rooted for at that point, though I might put him on the spot later on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This was Egert\u2019s first year running the draft as the team\u2019s general manager, and while you\u2019d want to make the right pick every year, there\u2019s no doubt a bit more at stake in getting this one right. \u201cAs we worked through the process, we quite often came back to the name Andrew Laurin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laurin would pick up the pace late-season, with five points in four games at the OHL Cup and 12 points over eight games in the OMHA U16 playoffs. Yet it was after meeting his family that he shifted from being a player of priority for the 67&#8217;s to the team\u2019s target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI spent an hour with them, and I got a sense that the human values are aligned with us as well,\u201d said Egert. \u201cThe ambition, the passion, and the mentality of the young athlete made him a fit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, while there was a fit between the player and the personality, an underlying connection was discovered during the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy parents used to live in Ottawa before they moved to Kingston, so I\u2019ve heard stories about the city,\u201d said Laurin, who grew up in Kingston. That connection would prove to be two-fold, as long before Egert was with the 67\u2019s, Egert spent some time growing up in Westport, Ontario, a small town around 45 minutes away from Kingston.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laurin describes himself as a \u2018smart, physical player who can be relied upon in big moments\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI thrive under pressure,\u201d he added. \u201cOnce you get to know me, I hope you\u2019ll know I have character and play with passion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What Laurin thinks his x-factor is his physicality, \u201cthat\u2019s what brings my game to life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thus, it is no surprise that Laurin says he models his game after physical power forwards Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s their leadership on the ice, the way they carry themself each and every shift,\u201d he said. \u201cTwo guys who bring energy to the game by their physicality and size, and they also score in the big moments and live up to the hype and higher-pressure situations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As for playing in Ottawa, Laurin can\u2019t wait to get started.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe work starts now,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s super exciting to see what the team was last year, and what it\u2019s only going to become.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI know it\u2019s a first-class organization and an amazing city to be in,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve heard nothing but great things, and I am super excited to get there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m super honoured to be under (Dave Cameron)\u2019s wing,\u201d he said. \u201cI expect him to hold me accountable\u2026 whatever he thinks I need to work on, I\u2019ll do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think my skating could always use improvement,\u201d he said of the one area he thinks he could develop the most. \u201cI think specifically, my first three steps and stride could get quicker, and if they get quicker, I\u2019ll be able to use my skillset to create more opportunities in the offensive zone for my teammates and I.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For now, he\u2019s keeping his plan for the next step on his OHL journey simple and straightforward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cJust looking to put the puck in the back of the net, be reliable, and hopefully bring a couple of trophies home in the coming years.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The 2026 OHL Priority Selection on Friday night proved to be a special night, returning to an in-person setting for the first time since 2000. The Ottawa 67\u2019s also lead all OHL teams with five, tied for the most among all CHL teams with the Medicine Hat Tigers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spencer Bowes<\/strong><br \/>\nR4 #102 by the New York Rangers<\/p>\n<p>Bowes, 18, was selected 293rd overall in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection. The Carleton Place, Ontario\u00a0native appeared in 67 regular-season games, tallying 23 goals and 19 assists for 42 points. In the playoffs, he contributed four goals and three assists for seven points over nine games.<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the 67\u2019s, Bowes played with the Pembroke Lumber Kings, where he notched 12 goals and 21 assists for 33 points in 27 games. He also captured a CCHL Championship with the Rockland Nationals during their Centennial Cup run, adding four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 15 games. In the 2023-24 campaign, Bowes suited up in 44 games for the\u00a0Perth Blue Wings of the EOJHL, tallying 28\u00a0goals and 45\u00a0assists for 73 points.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Vandenberg\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nR4 #103 by the LA Kings<\/p>\n<p>Vandenberg<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>18, was selected 93rd overall by Ottawa in the 2024 Priority Selection. The Nepean, Ontario native made an immediate impact in his rookie OHL season, appearing in 59 games and tallying 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points, finishing fifth among OHL rookies. In the playoffs, Vandenberg added four goals and three assists for seven points in nine games as the 67\u2019s advanced to the second round. He later joined Team Canada at the IIHF U18 World Championship in Slovakia, where he scored once.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining the Barber Poles, Vandenberg played for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the USHL, where he recorded nine goals and nine assists for 18 points in 55 games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryder Fetterolf<\/strong><br \/>\nR4 #125 by the Carolina Hurricanes<\/p>\n<p>Fetterolf<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>18, joined the team as a free agent ahead of the 2025-26 season. He posted an outstanding 29-9-2-1 record, a 2.07 goals-against average, a .923 save percentage, and six shutouts in 41 games. In his rookie OHL campaign, the Sewickley, Pennsylvania native led the league in goals-against average and save percentage. His six shutouts set new OHL and franchise records for a rookie goaltender in a single season.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterolf was named OHL Goaltender of the Year, becoming only the second Ottawa 67\u2019s goaltender to earn the honour. He also became the first player in franchise history to be recognized as CHL Goaltender of the Year. Fetterolf was further distinguished by being selected to both the OHL and CHL First All-Star and All-Rookie Teams for the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n<p>Before coming to Ottawa, Fetterolf played for Gilmour Academy in the USHS-Prep league, appearing in 61 games with a .940 save percentage and a 1.64 goals-against average.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jasper Kuhta<\/strong><br \/>\nR7 #197 by the Dallas Stars<\/p>\n<p>Kuhta, 19, was selected 72nd overall by Ottawa in the 2025 CHL Import Draft. In 62 regular-season games, the Helsinki, Finland native notched 32 goals and 31 assists for 63 points. During the 2026 OHL Playoffs, he contributed two goals and five assists for seven points in nine games. Kuhta also represented Finland at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship, tallying two goals and six assists over seven games.<\/p>\n<p>Kuhta spent the 2024-25 season with HIFK Helsinki\u2019s U20 team, recording 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points in 38 games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ondrej Ruml<\/strong><br \/>\nR7 #214 by the Colorado Avalanche<\/p>\n<p>Ruml, 18, joined the Ottawa 67\u2019s this season after a standout year with HC Dynamo Pardubice U17, where he registered nine goals and 31 assists for 40 points in 41 games.<\/p>\n<p>Selected eighth overall by Ottawa in the 2025 CHL Import Draft, the Valtice, Czechia native has tallied 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 68 regular-season games. In the 2026 OHL Playoffs, he has picked up one assist in nine games. Signed by Ottawa as an undrafted free agent last summer, he quickly established himself as one of the Canadian Hockey League\u2019s premier goaltenders during a historic rookie campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The Sewickley, Pennsylvania native led the Ontario Hockey League in both goals-against average and save percentage, while his six shutouts set a new OHL record for the most shutouts by a rookie goaltender in a single season.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterolf was named the OHL Goaltender of the Year, becoming just the second goaltender in Ottawa 67\u2019s history to earn the honour. His six shutouts not only established a new Ottawa 67&#8217;s franchise record but also set an OHL record for the most shutouts by a rookie goaltender in a season. Fetterolf shared the Dave Pinkney Trophy with Jaeden Nelson for the league&#8217;s lowest goals-against tandem and won the F.W. &#8220;Dinty&#8221; Moore Trophy for the rookie goaltender with the lowest goals-against average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyder\u2019s success comes as no surprise to anyone who worked with him this season,\u201d said 67\u2019s Goaltending Coach Andrew Mercer. \u201cHe\u2019s a committed athlete who constantly looks for ways to improve and embraces the work needed to become an elite goaltender. Watching his development over the year has been incredible, and I\u2019m very proud of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accolades continued to follow Fetterolf throughout the spring. In April, he was named OHL Goaltender of the Year, becoming only the second netminder in franchise history to earn the distinction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m extremely honoured to receive this award.
