Tyler Toffoli
Ottawa 67’s Alumni (2008-2012)
Tyler Toffoli was selected by the 67’s with the 7th overall pick in the 2008 priority selection. Toffoli would sign with the club and start playing with at the beginning of the 2008-09 season. Toffoli would have a solid rookie campaign scoring 46 points in 54 games. During his debut season with the club, Toffoli would suit up for Team Ontario during the World Under-17 hockey challenge for Team Ontario. Toffoli would finish with nine points in six games (four goals, five assists) and a goal medal, with Team Ontario beating Team Pacific 5-1 in the finals. As a result of his play, Toffoli was named to the OHL’s First All-Rookie Team.
During the summer following his first season, Toffoli was named to Team Canada to represent the nation at the 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Toffoli was placed on the top line with a former minor hockey and OHL Priority first pick John McFarland as well as Tyler Seguin. Team Canada went on to win gold at the tournament and in only four games played, the top lined combined for 25 points, three goals and five assists for Toffoli.
Toffoli would improve into his NHL draft and second OHL year. He would score more than 30 points in comparison to the year before finishing with 79 points in 65 games. At the end of the season, Toffoli was ranked the 16th overall North American skater and according to many a late to mid first round draft pick. Toffoli fell in the draft and was selected in the second round, 47th overall by the Los Angeles Kings.
Tyler would return to the 67’s for the 2010-2011 season. He would play one AHL game that season with the Manchester Monarchs recording a goal in his debut but ultimately, spent the duration of the season with the Barber Poles. Toffoli would finish the season with 108 points and be awarded both the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the league’s top scoring right winger and the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as the league’s scoring champion.
Toffoli would come back for one final year with the Barber Poles in 2012-2013. Tyler was awarded an ‘A’ and serve as an assistant captain for the team. He would hit the century mark for the second straight season scoring 100 points in 65 games, enough to win the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as top scoring right winger for the second year in a row. Toffoli would be named to the Canada/Russia series during this season as well as being awarded the captaincy for Team OHL in game 3. Team OHL would go on to win 10-7 with Toffoli picking up two assists.
As a result of the NHL lockout in 2012-2013, Toffoli was assigned to Manchester. Toffoli impressed during his time with the Monarchs scoring 28 goals, 23 asists (51 points) in 58 games. Toffoli also spent a little bit of time with the LA Kings once the lockout had completed, playing in 10 games and registering five points while he was called. As a result of his performance all season long, Toffoli was awarded the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award as the rookie of the year in the AHL. During the 2012-13 season, Toffoli also saw his first Stanley Cup playoff action, appearing in 12 games and registering 12 points, two goals and four assists.
The following year, Toffoli spent most of time with the Kings, playing a total of 62 games. Despite not registering mind blowing numbers in the regular season (12 goals, 17 assists), Toffoli’s rookie campaign was special, not as a result of the regular season but what he accomplished in the post season. Toffoli and the Los Angeles Kings became Stanley Cup Champions, beating the Rangers in five games to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup. Toffoli himself played well throughout the post season, registering 14 points, even split between goals and assists in 26 games played.
Toffoli remains a member of the Los Angeles Kings and is currently under contract until the 2019-2020 season with a cap hit of $4.6 million a year.
