Throwback Thursday: NHL Entry Draft – Cody Ceci

The 2015 NHL Entry Draft is only three weeks away. As the epic off-season event quickly approaches, each upcoming Throwback Thursday will feature an Ottawa 67’s alumni on their draft day. 

This week we lead off the series with hometown hockey hero Cody Ceci. Growing up in Orleans, ON, playing his major junior hockey with the Ottawa 67’s, and then being drafted by the NHL’s Ottawa Senators.

Brings a whole new meaning to “local talent”.

While with the 67’s, Cody was among the top defensemen in the CHL. His pure offensive skill and humble leadership made him an invaluable part of the Ottawa 67’s organization. He scored 60 points (17G,43A) in 64 games in the 2011-12 season, his draft year. 

He was rumoured by many around the NHL media to be drafted in the top 10, but somehow Ceci fell to 15th and the Senators snapped him up. Ottawa GM Bryan Murray could not believe his luck, as he assumed he’d never have the opportunity to select the gifted defenseman. 

“I honestly never thought he would be available at 15,” said Murray. “We had the guy rated much higher, without a doubt.”

A dream come true for both Ottawa-area natives.
