Konecny will suit up for Team Canada at WJC
Ottawa 67’s captain Travis Konecny has been selected one of 23 players to represent Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championships in Helsinki.
“All of us associated with the 67’s are extremely proud of Travis and we know he’ll represent Canada with all the talents and leadership qualities he has,” said Jeff Brown, head coach and general manager of the 67’s.
Konecny, the first member of the 67’s selected to the Canadian junior squad since defenceman Brendan Bell in 2003, joined the 67’s in 2013 after being chosen first overall by Ottawa in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
He produced an outstanding rookie season in 2013-14 and received the Emms Family Award as the OHL’s top rookie. Konecny scored 26 goals and posted 70 points in his début major-junior season.
Konecny’s contributions were honoured when he was named the 67’s captain at the start of the 2013-14 campaign.
Konecny, a native of Clachan, ON, scored 29 goals and 68 points last season and was picked in the first round of the NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.
This season, Konecny has seven goals and ranks second in the OHL with 38 assists.
Canada, winner of the 2015 tournament, begins the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championships in Helsinki on Saturday, December 26 at 2 p.m. (Ottawa-Gatineau time) against the United States.
