Vandenberg’s hat trick powers 67’s to season-opening rout of Kingston
Any victory is sweet in the Ontario Hockey League; but against a bitter rival, with a pair of players scoring their first OHL goal, and one nabbing his first hat trick, is liable to leave the Ottawa 67’s with cavities.
In their season-opening visit to the Kingston Frontenacs, the Barber Poles were powered by a hat trick effort from the debuting Thomas Vandenberg, en route to a 6-2 victory. Brock Chitaroni also tallied his first OHL goal in his debut, with Nic Whitehead and Nathan Amidovski scoring the supplementary markers. Jaeden Nelson did his part in goal, turning aside 19 shots in the effort.
It took Vandenberg all of two minutes and seventeen seconds to open the scoring with his first in the OHL. On an early power play, banging home a Whitehead rebound on the doorstep.
At the 9:46 mark, Vandenberg’s forecheck knocked the puck loose, and Chitaroni skated the puck down to the bottom of the circle to Frontenacs netminder Gavin Betts’ left, and fooled him with a quick shot to make it 2-0.
Just 59 seconds later, it was Whitehead getting on the board to make it a three-goal game heading into the second period. Ty Robar got one back for the home side in the early goings, but Vandenberg stole the puck at his own blue line, and scored on a breakaway wrister to restore the two-goal lead.
Amidovski made it 5-1 late in the second, and again Kingston found an early-period answer in the third thanks to Nolan Snyder, but Vandenberg’s hat trick marker salted the game away only 36 seconds later, with Connor Bewick recording his first OHL point by way of a secondary assist.
The 67’s are next in action a week from today, visiting the North Bay Battalion in a 7:00pm puck drop, before their home opener that Sunday at 3:00pm vs the Soo Greyhounds.

Amidovski a porté le score à 5-1 à la fin de la deuxième période, et Kingston a de nouveau réagi rapidement au début de la troisième période grâce à Nolan Snyder, mais le tour du chapeau de Vandenberg a scellé l’issue du match seulement 36 secondes plus tard, Connor Bewick enregistrant son premier point dans la Ligue de hockey de l’Ontario grâce à une aide secondaire.
Les 67’s seront de retour sur la glace dans une semaine, en visite chez le Battalion de North Bay à 19 h, avant leur premier match à domicile dimanche à 15 h contre les Greyhounds de Soo.
