Petes break 67’s hearts with late winner
The Ottawa 67’s were only six seconds away from at least a single point in Peterborough on Thursday night, but a last-second marker from Genc Ula and the Petes saw the Barber Poles leaving empty-handed, losing 4-3.
In a big game for both sides, it was the Petes starting quicker, as Brody Partridge tucked one into the net five minutes in. Though it was the subject of review, it stood, serving as the lone marker of the period.
Just 28 seconds into the second, Brennan Faulkner extended the Petes’ lead to two, but the Barber Poles responded fast. Frankie Marrelli made a great play at the blue line to keep the puck in the offensive zone before sending a gem of a pass across the seam to Chris Barlas, who made no mistake.
Ottawa thought they tied the game a little while later, but after review, Filip Ekberg was determined to have kicked the puck into the net, setting up a big third period.
For the third time on the night, the Petes picked up an early-period goal, this time it was Jonathan Melee scoring a short-handed marker.
Still, there was life for the Barber Poles, answering back at the midway point of the final regulation frame. Once again, it was Barlas tipping a Brad Horner shot out front, with another assist going to Marrelli.
With six minutes to go, Ekberg got the goal he was denied earlier, busting in on a breakaway, before sending it into the top corner over the goaltender’s glove, tying the game at three.
With overtime looking like a certainty, Genc Ula threw a shot on net from the point, and it found its way to the back of the net, breaking the 67’s hearts with a 4-3 loss.
