Mews scores in overtime as 67’s win third straight vs Generals
For the third straight meeting, the Ottawa 67’s and Oshawa Generals needed overtime, and for the third straight meeting, the result was the same.
This time, it was top NHL Draft prospect Henry Mews dealing the dagger 1:53 into the extra frame, as the 67’s picked up a 3-2 victory on the road. Ian Michelone made 20 saves for his fourth straight victory, as Ottawa swept their six-point weekend.
As was the case in the weekend’s previous games, the 67’s badly outshot their opponent, but had to settle for a narrow margin of victory. Ottawa dominated the category 39-22, including a 14-4 first period.
The enhanced Ottawa powerplay came through again to open the scoring, 3:20 in. Braeden Kressler found Luca Pinelli down low, and Sam Mayer blasted his pass up high on Jacob Oster, for a 1-0 lead.
Despite controlling the game, the 67’s had to wait until the second period to pad their lead, and it came by way of special teams again. This time, Jack Dever stole the puck at the Ottawa line, streaked in on a breakaway, and made no mistake with a quick shot.
Stuart Roofs got the home team on the board with 2:58 to go in the frame, and made it a 2-1 score heading into the third.
The 67’s had their chances, but in the late goings, it was Calum Ritchie catching them on a quick change, and tying the game 2-2.
Michelone made some massive saves at the buzzer, as the Generals pressed for the winner, but the game was destined for overtime.
Showing more good puck movement in the offensive end, as Pinelli cycled the puck to Kressler, who sent a quick shot on goal. Charging the net was Mews, and the seventeen-year-old smacked the rebound into the open goal, while falling, to clinch a big win for Ottawa.
They’ll embark on the road, this upcoming weekend, beginning with a 7:05pm visit to the Sarnia Sting on Friday night.
