GAME RECAP: 67’s topple Petes, finish weekend undefeated
The Ottawa 67’s close out their weekend with a display of firepower in their 5-2 win over the Peterborough Petes.
“I thought the game was great,” said Ryder Fetterolf, who stopped 26 of 28. “Before the game, coach Cameron came in and said this is about as close as you’ll get to a playoff game in January.”
The game started favouring the Peterborough Petes, who took possession of the offensive zone, but tight defensive play kept them from really generating anything. Despite the 67’s power play, both teams’ offences would be slow to get started. However, as the period went on, slowly, both teams started hitting on net. Despite a combined 29 shots in the first, both netminders were flawless; Ottawa’s Fetterolf stopped 12, and Peterborough’s Masen Johnston saved 17.
While both the Petes and the 67’s were coming off back-to-back-to-backs.
“You play the first game, and however it goes, you come in the next day with a new mindset, fresh, and play your game,” said Fetterolf.
“We just had to make sure that we were initiating the game and not chasing it,” said Thomas Vandenberg.
The 67’s continued to put pressure on the Petes throughout the beginning of the second. However, it was Peterborough who scored first, thanks to a slot shot from Brayden McCallum. However, Kaleb Dietsch would secure the game-tying goal, going high blocker over Johnston to make the game 1-1. Some after-the-whistle roughing led to a four-on-four, where Thomas Vandenberg finished on a tic-tac-toe play to put the Barber Poles up 2-1. Nic Sima would pick up an insurance marker off a tipped point shot from Kohyn Eshkawkogan to end the period at 3-1.
Hometown hero Spencer Bowes would net a fourth goal for the 67’s, extending their lead to 4-1. Nic Sima picked up his second assist on the play. Late in the period, Winnipeg Jets prospect Kieron Walton would find twine to give the Petes life. However, Nic Sima would convert on the empty net to seal the 5-3 victory for the Barber Poles.
“Sima’s a great guy, brings a great energy,” Vandenberg said. “He gives off a playoff feel, you can feel it around the guys and it’s really fun having him around.”
