GAME RECAP: 67’s pick up point, shoutout loss versus Firebirds
The Ottawa 67’s late third-period surge was enough to pick up a point, but not enough to secure a win as they fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Flint Firebirds.
The first period proved to be one that was evenly matched, as both offenses found themselves stumped. Ottawa would be held to seven shots in the period, while Flint could only secure six shots on goal. However, the Firebirds would find twine at the end of the first period, courtesy of Brady Smith.
The second was one for the goaltenders, as both teams’ offenses began to carve through each other’s defenses. Jaeden Nelson would stop all 16 of the Firebirds’ chances, while Mason Vaccari would shut down all 12 of Ottawa’s.
The 67’s would finally break the ice with a goal from Ondrej Ruml. They’d then get themselves ahead of the Firebirds thanks to a power play marker from Nic Whitehead. The Firebirds would quickly answer back with goals from Nathan Aspinall and Urban Podrekar to bring the score to 3-2 for Flint. However, David Bedkowski would pick up the game-tying goal, which would help the 67’s ride into overtime.
Both teams would be unable to score in extra time, with Nelson and Vaccari both stopping three shots apiece. Nathan Aspinall would get a goal in the tail-end of the opening round of the shootout. Neither team would score in the second round, but Spencer Bowes would give Ottawa a chance to stay in the game to start the third round. Nelson would stop Battaglia to keep Ottawa alive to end round three. However, after a Cooper Foster miss, Christopher Thibodeau would sink the biscuit to win the game for Flint.
