GAME RECAP: 67’s flatten Petes, extend win streak to six
The Ottawa 67’s picked up a statement win over the Peterborough Petes 4-1 at TD Place on Friday.
“Another team, another big win,” said Sam McCue.
The first period showed itself to be a physical showdown, with both sides trading massive hits in the first half of the period. However, the 67’s proved to be the more dominant team with the puck to start, with the shots favouring Ottawa 7-4 after 10 minutes. Just after the turn of the first half of the period, Sam McCue would bury a chance on the breakaway to secure Ottawa the 1-0 lead. He’d add salt to the wound, burying a lacrosse goal to bring the 67’s up 2-0 at the tail end of the period.
“It was a pretty nice goal,” he laughed. “I had a lot of time and space behind the net, and there was no defenseman on the post.”
“I’ve tried it before and had not been successful; it was open, so I tried it, and luckily it went in this time.”
Despite Peterborough finally getting on the board, the 67’s would continue to control the game throughout the second. Nic Whitehead put one past Masen Johnston on the breakaway to bring the score to 3-1. The game would continue to fall off the rails for Peterborough as they’d find themselves on a 5-on-3 penalty kill, which Jasper Kuhta would find the net on to finish the period 4-1 Ottawa. After two, the 67’s would lead 30-16 in shots.
The Petes would gain more control offensively, leading in shots to start. However, things would derail as Peterborough proved incapable of surmounting a comeback with both teams picking up 20 penalties in the third period as it descended into chaos. The 67’s would ultimately outshoot the Petes for the third straight period by its end.
“It’s a great game from our group,” he said. “That was pretty much playoff hockey in a nutshell.”
