Frontenacs overcome 67’s late surge
In the battle of win streaks, it was the Kingston Frontenacs keeping theirs alive with a 4-3 win over the Ottawa 67’s on Sunday afternoon.
Ottawa scored the first goal of the game, with Henry Mews making a nice play to keep the puck in the zone, before finding Chris Barlas out front for a tap-in.
Unfortunately for the Barber Poles, the offence dried up, and Kingston began applying the pressure late in the first frame. With under a minute to play, Ben Pickell tied the game, with Tuomas Uronen getting on the scoresheet.
In the second, the Fronts took the lead courtesy of a back-door pass from Ethan Miedema to Gage Hayes, and in the third, they extended it thanks to an exceptionally odd bounce from below the goal line, that found the back of the net. That goal was also credited to Pickell.
With under four minutes to play, the 67’s got one back, this time from captain Luca Pinelli, cutting the lead down to just one.
Collin MacKenzie vacated the Ottawa goal, and the 67’s upped the pressure to its highest level. Eventually, after numerous efforts to keep the puck in, it squirted its way over to Will Gerrior, who made no mistake, tying the game with a little over a minute to play, sending things to overtime for the second straight game, and the second time in two meetings with Kingston.
Just when it looked like a shootout would be needed, Kingston scored with 0.9 seconds left in overtime, stunning Ottawa and winning 4-3.
