Dever scores two in 67’s win over Fronts
Despite the challenge of opening their 2022-23 preseason schedule on the road, the Ottawa 67’s came away with a win in their opening matchup, defeating the Kingston Frontenacs by a final score of 2-0, Sunday afternoon.
Jack Dever scored twice, thanks to two assists each from Brady Stonehouse, and Brad Gardiner, while Collin MacKenzie made 22 saves to earn the shutout.
The Barber Poles took control immediately out of the gate, in a first period that saw them outshoot Kingston 11-5, thanks to a pair of powerplay chances. Just 6:21 in, Gardiner got the puck to Stonehouse, who found Dever to open the scoring.
Though they were outshot 8-6 in the second frame, the 67’s ramped up the physical play. Defencemen Matthew Mayich, and Frankie Marrelli threw some crushing checks, as Ottawa was able to carry their 1-0 advantage into the third.
Near the midway point of the third, Gardiner took a shot that was stopped by Frontenacs netminder Mason Vaccari, but Dever was parked on the doorstep to bang home the rebound, giving Ottawa the insurance marker.
Kingston threw everything they could at the 67’s as time wound down, but MacKenzie stood tall, and the Barber Poles skated off with a 2-0 win.
