67’s training camp: ratcheting up on Day 3 finale
Thursday brought a close to Ottawa 67’s training camp from The Arena at TD Place, with participants taking the ice for a pair of intrasquad games.
On Wednesday, Team Red ran away with the proceedings, snagging a 6-0 win, but forward Kimi Körbler said his Team White wouldn’t tolerate another blowout. Though the Swiss import had the chance to rest in the second scrimmage of camp, his team showed up.
Chris Barlas opened the scoring for Team Red, but their 1-0 lead wouldn’t last long, with Team White scoring five consecutive goals, a pair of which were scored by Nic Whitehead. The romp continued into the game’s final frame, culminating in an 8-3 victory for Team White, evening the series at one game apiece.
Following a few hours of rest, the teams took the ice for the final scrimmage, with bragging rights on the line. With the rosters slightly shaken up – largely with current 67’s rotating in and out – the story was much the same for Team White.
Luca Pinelli opened the scoring, and before you knew it, Shaan Kingwell gave Team White a 4-0 lead. Before the end of the second period, however, Team Red answered back, getting a pair of goals to cut the lead in half from Will Gerrior and Henry Mews, but that was as close as they would ever get.
Ethan Brassard and Cooper Foster restored the four-goal advantage, giving Team White a 6-2 win, and the win in the series.
The final score of the games doesn’t bank points in the standings, of course, but it allowed 67’s brass to get another good look at the team’s prospects, before being charged with the difficult task of paring down the roster.
The next time the Barber Poles play a game isn’t too far away. On Sunday, they’ll travel to Kingston for the first preseason game on the calendar, before a trip to North Bay next Friday.
