67’s take season series over Petes
The first-place Ottawa 67’s picked up another win over the Peterborough Petes, Thursday night, by way of a 4-1 victory at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
Brady Stonehouse scored a pair, with Thomas Sirman, and Luca Pinelli tallying the others, in a 30-save victory for Collin MacKenzie. Even with one matchup left, the 67’s four wins over the Petes give them the season series victory.
Perhaps of most import for Ottawa, however, was starting goaltender Max Donoso leaving the game in the opening minutes, after being run over in the crease by Jax Dubois. No penalty was called on the play, and MacKenzie took over in goal for the Barber Poles.
Despite the tough early circumstances, the 67’s held firm, and entered the second period in a scoreless tie, though the Petes led the shots on goal totals 18-11.
The road side broke through just under six minutes into the middle period. A Henry Mews shot was stopped by Michael Simpson, and bounced around in front, before Sirman knocked the loose puck home to open the scoring for the 67’s.
Peterborough pulled even a couple minutes later, courtesy of Owen Beck, but Stonehouse’s first of two on the night restored the Ottawa lead at the 18:23 mark of the frame. Jack Beck made a slick pass to Mews, and his point shot was deflected home by Stonehouse in front to fool Simpson, and make it 2-1.
Ottawa expanded upon their lead a little past the midway point of the third, when Derek Smyth rushed into the offensive zone, and fed Pinelli, who beat Simpson with a laser from the high slot. The Petes had a chance to get back in the game on a late powerplay, but couldn’t sustain any offence against the 67’s, leading to them closing the game out by way of a Stonehouse empty-netter with just over two minutes to go.
The Barber Poles will look to pick up yet another win over the Petes, tomorrow night, at 7:00pm inside The Arena at TD Place.
