67’s swept in home-and-home with Peterborough
The Ottawa 67’s got as close to a win as you could imagine inside The Arena at TD Place on Saturday afternoon, but the Peterborough Petes ended up with the two points and a shootout win, earning a 4-3 victory.
Aside from the rough stuff you’d expect in the back half of a home-and-home, and the eighth matchup of the season, the biggest news of the period was a goal-of-the-year candidate from 67’s captain Luca Pinelli.
He beat a defender to the front of the net, before putting it between his legs, and flicking the puck into the cage thanks to his new angle, scoring his 32nd goal of the season.
In the second, the Barber Poles built on their lead. Frankie Marrelli turned a shot toward goal, and Will Gerrior, standing at the net front, tipped the shot past the goaltender, notching his 29th of the campaign.
As they have done all season long, the Petes fought back late in the frame, as Quinton Pagé lifted a backhander into the top of the net, narrowing the gap to one as the horn sounded.
Only a minute into the final frame, Matthew Mayich ripped a shot off the post and in from the blue line, restoring the 67’s lead.
Then, just like the 67’s did two days ago, the Petes came screaming back to tie the game at three. First, it was Brennan Faulkner, and then it was former 67 Brady Stonehouse on the power play.
Unlike Thursday night, there was no winner to be had before the buzzer, and the game headed for overtime, but it solved nothing. There was only one goal in the shootout, and it was for the maroon and white, as they skated away with a 4-3 win.
