67’s open busy weekend with 3-2 win in Kingston
Sasha Chmelevski scored his 8th and 9th goals of the season, while Leo Lazarev made 31 saves to lift the Ottawa 67’s to a 3-2 win over the Kingston Frontenacs, Friday evening to open their three-games-in-three-nights weekend.
The 67’s continued their road dominance as Lazarev put on a brilliant performance at the Rogers K-Rock Centre, making several key saves and keeping his team in front. Ottawa are now 5-2-2-0 on the road this season.
The 67’s were off to a flying start in the first period dominating Kingston 8-1 on the shot clock. Jeff Brown’s team scored two goals in the last three minutes of the first period to take a 2-0 lead to the locker-room. Chmelevski netted his first goal of the night with three minutes left in the first frame to open the scoring before Drake Rymsha scored his 8th of the campaign less than two minutes later.
In the second period, it was the Lazarev show. The 19-year-old netminder stopped all 19 shots he faced to keep his team in front, 2-0 after 40 minutes.
The Frontenacs opened up the third period by cutting Ottawa’s lead in half when Ted Nichol scored his 4th of the season at the 8:55 mark of the final period. The 67’s restored their two-goal lead less than a minute later, when Chmelevski found the back of the net for the second time on the night, with captain Travis Barron picking up his second assist of the game.
With less than two minutes left in the game, the Frontenacs were once again able to cut Ottawa’s lead to a goal but that’s the closest they would get as the 67′s held on en route to a 3-2 win.
The team will then return home tomorrow afternoon to host the Guelph Storm at 2 p.m, before closing out its busy weekend on the road Sunday afternoon with a stop in Oshawa.
