67’s in the win column with gutsy performance in Oshawa
It was a night of firsts for the Ottawa 67’s, who took down the defending Eastern Conference champion Oshawa Generals 4-3 in overtime on Sunday evening.
The Barber Poles largely dictated the opening frame, but that’s not the story told by the scoreline. The shot clock read 24-8 in favour of the visitors, but the scoreboard, where it counts, displayed a 2-0 lead for the Generals.
Their goals came via Ottawa native Matthew Buckley, and son of former 67’s forward Miguel Delisle, Tristan Delisle. Unfortunately for the Barber Poles, their wide discrepancy in shots on goal was worsened by hitting a trio of posts, and they headed to the locker room down a couple.
Quickly in the second period, Ottawa answered back. Rookie defenceman Kohyn Eshkawkogan picked up his first OHL point, finding overager Will Gerrior in the middle of the rink, where he fired a shot past Jacob Oster to cut Oshawa’s lead down to one.
In the final minute of the period, however, the Gennies got it back, with Buckley scoring his second of the night, banging home a rebound on the power play.
In the third period, the Generals held the 67’s without a shot on goal for nearly eight minutes, but that changed when Luca Pinelli cleverly stripped the puck away at the blue line, and fed it forward to Cooper Foster, who made no mistake, cutting the lead to one once again.
Just a few minutes later, the 67’s took advantage of a power play opportunity, as Pinelli found Filip Ekberg in the circle, where the Swede blasted home his first OHL goal.
Neither team was able to find a winner in regulation, and the game headed to overtime.
Late in the overtime period, 67’s rookies got the play going, with Nathan Amidovski getting his first point, and Eshkawkogan adding another, as Foster one-timed his second of the game into the goal, sending Ottawa home victorious for the first time in 2024-25.
The win is also the first in the career of goaltender Jaeden Nelson.
