67’s improve to 7-0 with win over Troops
Apparently not satisfied with their franchise record six-game winning streak to begin the 2022-23 campaign, the Ottawa 67’s made it seven straight, Thursday night, with a 4-2 win over the Battalion in North Bay.
Brad Gardiner got the action started, and Tyler Boucher scored in his third straight game, before Vinzenz Rohrer potted the eventual gamewinner, and Jack Matier added an insurance marker. Max Donoso extended his own record win streak to six, stopping 31 of 33 Battalion shots.
Gardiner opened the scoring at 13:02 of the first period, as Ottawa’s league-best powerplay came through again. Henry Mews’ initial point shot stop, but Gardiner was on the doorstep to bang home the rebound.
It was only a little over a minute later that Gavin Ewles threw the puck down the ice, and Boucher charged in on the loose puck, firing it past Dom DiVincentiis, giving the 67’s a 2-0 lead.
In the second frame, on another powerplay, Rohrer capped off a mad flurry of his chances with his third of the season, sending Ottawa to the third period with a 3-0 advantage.
Nearly the entire third period elapsed, before the two teams combined for three goals within the final two minutes. Kyle McDonald got the Battalion on the board with 1:52 remaining, but Matier returned fire with an empty-netter, as the clock read 47 seconds. Anthony Romani answered back, just six seconds later, but time ran out on the Troops, and Ottawa earned their seventh straight win, 4-2.
Game Notes:
- With an assist, Henry Mews is now on a four-game point streak.
- Vinzenz Rohrer extended his point streak to five games: now the longest on the team.
- Brady Stonehouse recorded an assist, and now has five points in his last three games.
- Jack Matier chipped in with a helper on Rohrer’s goal, and secured his third multi-point effort of the season.
- Gavin Ewles’ assist was his second OHL point. Both have come against North Bay.
