67’s earn critical point in overtime loss to Frontenacs
The Ottawa 67’s gave the Kingston Frontenacs everything they could handle and then some on Sunday afternoon, securing a big point in their chase for the playoffs despite a 3-2 loss.
A pressure-packed first frame went scoreless for a little over 10 minutes before Kingston opened the scoring. Ethan Miedema polished off a cross-ice pass to give his side the lead, but the 67’s didn’t take long to respond.
Under six minutes later, Luca Pinelli put the Barber Poles on the board. Filip Ekberg was denied on a golden opportunity alone out front, but Pinelli was Johnny on the spot, collecting the rebound, and cashing it into the open cage for his 35th goal of the season.
The first-period marker both extended Ekberg’s point streak to eight games, and pushed Pinelli into sole possession of 12th place in the franchise goal-scoring record books with 126, moving clear of Dan Tessier.
In the second, the script repeated itself, and the Frontenacs opened the scoring on another odd-man rush, this time, it was Meidema again finishing the scoring play. It took a little longer to get an answer this time, but it did come in the dying seconds of the period.
Down low behind the net, Jack Dever put in serious work, before moving the puck to Matthew Mayich at the point. He fed a cross-ice pass to Frankie Marrelli, who wound up, and blasted a shot on net. It pinballed off a few bodies, but found its way into the net, knotting the score at two, and setting up a big-time third period for each team’s playoff outlooks.
The third resulted in little offence and the game headed for overtime. With a shootout seeming like a certainty, Tuomas Uronen fired a one-timer home, suddenly ending the contest with a third goal.
