A few new faces
The Ottawa 67’s have added a few new faces over the past few weeks as Head Coach and General Manager Jeff Brown has looked to balance his team’s future development with the need to solidify a few positions down the stretch this year.
With the OHL trade deadline having come and gone this week, Brown and his staff have managed to bring in a handful of new faces and several draft picks with only one roster player going the other way.
Here’s a look at some of the most recent additions to the 67’s roster, including two new faces that will make their debuts on Thursday night in Niagara at 7 p.m. against the Ice Dogs, as Ottawa continues its push for a playoff spot.
Zack Dorval, C
The most recent acquisition leading up to the deadline saw the 67’s add some depth up front when they picked up centre Zack Dorval from the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for a fourth-round pick (previously acquired from Sarnia). The former second-round OHL pick brings with him more than 130 games of experience in the league. The 18-year-old native of Hearst, ON developed with the Kapuskasing Flyers Midget AAA and the Soo Thunder Minor Midget AAA, averaging better than a point-per-game with both teams. Dorval will make his 67’s debut on the road in Niagara on Thursday night.
Chris Martenet, D
Another new player set to make his 67’s debut on Thursday night, Martenet was acquired by Ottawa from London earlier in the week, along with three draft choices, in exchange for an eighth-round pick and the rights to forward Dante Salituro, who has split time between the AHL and ECHL this season. The 20-year-old Martenet, a fourth-round pick of the Dallas Stars in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 212 pounds, adds some experience and size to a young blue line that has missed former captain Jake Middleton this season. Martenet has 11 goals and 34 points, along with 166 penalty minutes, in 158 OHL games after spending the 2013-14 season with the Indiana Ice of the USHL. He developed with the Shattuck St. Mary’s Midget AA program.
Mathieu Foget, C
Though not acquired via trade, the 67’s also recently signed free agent centre Mathieu Foget and the 19-year-old Orleans native has dressed for the past four 67’s games, recording one assist. In his first OHL season, Foget comes to Ottawa after two years with Merrimack College of the NCAA, which followed time with the CCHL’s Gloucester Rangers and his Bantam and Midget years spent with the Ottawa Jr. 67’s.
Draft picks
Through the player moves, the 67’s also continued to plan for the future. Prior to the deadline, the 67’s granted the trade request of Drake Rymsha, moving the forward to Sarnia for four draft picks, including second-round choices in 2018 and 2020. Ottawa also got a fourth-round pick in 2017 and a third-rounder in 2019.
The deal to acquire Martenet also brought in a second-round pick in 2021, a third-round pick in 2018 and a 15th round pick in 2021.
Fans will get their first chance see the new additions to the 67’s when Ottawa returns home to The Arena at TD Place Tuesday, January 24 against the Mississauga Steelheads at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available online at Ottawa67s.com, by phone at 613.232.6767 X1 or in person at The Box Office at TD Place.
