GAME RECAP: 67’s pick up statement win over Generals
The 67’s extend their win streak to five games, picking up a definitive 6-1 win over the Oshawa Generals.
Ottawa would enter the meeting showing off its firepower with seven straight shots to start the game. Shaan Kingwell would connect with Brock Chitaroni in the slot, burying the puck over Jaden Cholette for the lead. Ottawa would continue to keep Oshawa on the back foot until Oshawa would break the streak and seal the deal with a goal on their first shot. From there, the Generals would begin to find their groove a little more as the game began to trend up and down.
“I think you look at the shot total, I couldn’t even believe it,” said David Bedkowski. “I’ve never seen the shot clock look like that, 31-2 at one point.”
The 67’s would go on the power play, where they’d continue to rally more shots on the Generals. Nic Whitehead would finish off a beautiful seam pass by 2026 NHL draft prospect Thomas Vandenberg to give Ottawa the lead again to end the period 2-1.
The power play has been a huge part of the 67’s success as of late.
“We’ve done a good job at keeping it real simple,” said assistant coach Norm Milley.
Ottawa would keep up the pressure to start the second, keeping the Generals to no shots across the first twelve minutes of the period. A bobbled rebound off a dump from Teddy Spitznagel would lead to another goal from Spencer Bowes to put Ottawa to 3-1. The 67’s would continue to dominate in shots, with 36-6 after 40.
Ottawa continued their pressure into the third, with Whitehead serving Nic Sima on a 2-on-1, with the overager finishing for the 4-1 lead. After using his dark stick, Filip Ekberg, thanks to advice from Cooper Foster, would bring out ‘white lightning’ and find the net twice, first with a net-front dunk and later a wrist shot from the face-off dot, securing the 6-1 victory.
“I used the black stick for the first two periods, but I couldn’t shoot, I just missed everything,” he said. “Coop told me to change to the white stick, and it worked.”
Despite only facing 11 shots, Ryder Fetterolf had a strong night, posting a .909 save percentage and coming up with some big games.
“Obviously, I can’t control how many shots I get,” said Fetterolf. “I just try to stop everyone that comes by my way.”
“It’s tough to get 10 shots a game because it’s hard to stay in the game,” he said. “I just try to do everything I would if I were getting shots: keep going to the boards, doing a few skating patterns during the TV timeout and visualize myself getting shots.”
Heading into the final two games, the 67’s are riding a five-game win streak. Norm Milley talked about the importance of coming into the playoffs with confidence.
“I think it’s huge for us,” he said. “Our PK, power play, our five-on-five structure, I think we want to be rolling going into the playoffs.”
“One of our messages is, it doesn’t matter who our opponent is,” he said. “We’re playing against the 67’s.”
“We want to compete and get better every game,” he said. “For us, it was a matter of keeping things rolling, keeping things simple, and we had a full team effort tonight.”
