ST. CATHERINES — Mikkel Aagard scored a hat trick and added an assist while Anthony DiFruscia had a goal and an assist as the Niagara IceDogs cruised to an 8-3 win over the Ottawa 67’s on Saturday night.
It was a major result for the IceDogs, which won for the sixth consecutive game and narrowed the gap to only three points of the 67’s in the Ontario Hockey League standings of the Eastern Conference.
The 67’s, which have lost three straight, sit in fourth place and are clinging to a spot that would provide home-ice advantage to the top four teams in the opening round.
The IceDogs, which lost eight straight to start the season, are not only attempting to reel in the 67’s, but also third-place North Bay and, perhaps, second-place Barrie.
Niagara led 4-0 early in the second before the 67’s scored back-to-back goals by Travis Konecny and Travis Barron, but the IceDogs pulled away from there.
The 67’s have a chance to get back on track on Sunday in Mississauga against the Steelheads. The next Ottawa home game is Friday, March 13 against the Oshawa Generals. Face-off is at 7:30 p.m.
