67’s Shutout by Fronts on the Road
OTTAWA — It was hard to believe, but true: The Kingston Frontenacs and Ottawa 67’s stepped on the ice Sunday with identical win totals for November.
That would have been one victory against five losses each before the Frontenacs scored three goals in a span of two minutes 42 seconds in the second period on their way to an 8-0 thumping of the 67’s before a crowd of 3,319 at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston.
The shutout loss was the first for the 67’s since March 12, the second-last game of the 2012-13 Ontario Hockey League season, and it stretched their current losing streak to six. They haven’t won since Nov. 2 at Peterborough.
It also dropped them into a tie for ninth place in the Eastern Conference overall standings at 7-13-2, tied in points with the Niagara IceDogs (6-13-4) and only two points up on the Belleville Bulls (5-13-4).
The Frontenacs have been underachievers of late, but remain second in the East Division and fourth in the conference despite having just three victories in their past 10 games. Their record is 11-8-3.
Ryan Kujawinski and newcomer Robert Polesello, who was a fifth-round draft pick three years ago, but just joined the Frontenacs last week after leaving the University of Vermont, scored in the first period.
The Frontenacs opened things up in the second with goals by Darcy Greenaway at 13:17, Sam Bennett at 15:48 and Spencer Watson at 15:59.
Watson, Kujawinski and Samuel Schutt of Palmer Rapids closed out the scoring in the third period.
The 67’s were outshot 17-5 in the opening period and 43-24 overall. Head coach Chris Byrne replaced No. 1 goaltender Philippe Trudeau with Jacob Blair in the third period.
Byrne declined to comment after the game.
The 67’s return to action Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. with the annual School Day contest, this time against the Belleville Bulls.
