Our 20’s – Rimouski Océanic
Throughout the summer, the QMJHL will summarize the journey of its 20-year-old players. Today, those of the Rimouski Océanic: Jonathan Fauchon, Jacob Mathieu and Pier-Olivier Roy.
Jonathan Fauchon, centre
Fauchon has shown exceptional consistency this season, recording 50 points in 31 games with the Armada, then 53 points in 33 games with the Océanic, en route to the scoring championship with 103 points (46-57). Fauchon became the 18th player in QMJHL history to record 50 points with two different teams in the same season. He was also voted the most valuable player to his team, synonymous with the Michel-Brière Trophy. A 1st round pick, 10th overall, of the Armada in 2020, Fauchon left BLB as the team’s leader in points (220) and second in games played (226), goals (97) and assists (123). Author of 273 points (118-155) in 259 games in our league, the center will continue his career with Providence College in the NCAA.
Jacob Mathieu, left wing
A third-round pick of the Oceanic in 2020, 39th overall, Mathieu spent his entire five-year junior career in Rimouski. His 203 points rank him 16th in team history, while his 116 goals are good for fifth and his 250 games played are 12th. Captain Mathieu has also left his mark on Rimouski with his community involvement, including being a finalist for the Humanitarian Player Trophy in 2024-2025. After an injury-plagued 2022-2023 season, Mathieu exploded for 76 goals (131 points) in 114 games in his 19- and 20-year-old seasons, helping the Océanic reach the Gilles-Courteau Trophy final in 2025. He then led the QMJHL with 31 points (17-14) in 23 playoff games. His brilliance earned him to be recruited by Northeastern University.
Pier-Olivier Roy, defenceman
Seventh overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Tigres, Roy played four seasons in Victoriaville before being traded to Rimouski. In 2021, as a rookie, he helped the Tigres win the championship, with 5 assists in 19 playoff games. Seasons of 68 and 50 points allowed him to leave Victoriaville with a grand total of 154 points, the third highest among the team’s defencemen. The same goes for his 132 assists, while his 222 games played are good for fifth place in history. In Rimouski, Roy had a 32-point season, before doubling down in the playoffs to make up for the loss of Spencer Gill and help the Océanic reach the 2025 final, which Moncton won. Author of 186 points (24-162) in 283 games in our league, Roy will live the professional adventure with the Rouen Dragons, in France, next year.
