Our 20s: Chicoutimi Saguenéens
The young Chicoutimi Saguenéens stunned the Moncton Wildcats in the first round of the playoffs, before being swept by the Cape Breton Eagles. The leadership of their 20-year-old players, Alexis Morin, Jonathan Desrosiers and Craig Armstrong, has served them well this season.
An 11th-round pick of the Drummondville Voltigeurs in 2019, Morin had an outstanding 2019-2020 season in the Ligue M18AAA du Québec with the Séminaire St-François, being named player of the year and student-player of the year.
Morin went on to make the QMJHL his full-time home in 2020-2021. His career took a different turn in January 2023, when he was traded to Chicoutimi. Since then, he has recorded 85 points (43-42) in 97 games, in addition to serving as a role model for the Sags’ young players.
His brilliance at school earned him the title of Scholastic Player of the Year in 2023-2024, synonymous with the Marcel-Robert Trophy. After 241 games in the QMJHL (146 points), Morin will play at McGill University next year, where he will study law. He is also considering a move into medicine one day.
In the USports, he could face Jonathan Desrosiers, who will be lining up for the Moncton University. The Dieppe, New Brunswick-born defenseman played 11 games with the Moncton Wildcats in 2019-2020, before moving to Edmundston in Junior A (MJAHL) the following season.
Desrosiers returned to the QMJHL in 2021-2022 and provided robust, defensive play for the Saguenéens for three seasons, en route to a total of 197 games in our league.
Craig Armstrong, meanwhile, was a first-round pick of the WHL’s Prince George Cougars in 2018. He played four seasons in the WHL (220 games), with Prince George and Red Deer, before opting for the Saguenéens, with whom he collected 39 points, including 17 goals, in 67 games.
Happy future to Alexis, Jonathan and Craig!
