Final games are set at Gatorade Frost Excellence Challenge
BOISBRIAND, QC – The Quebec blue team had a hard time against the Nova Scotia team earlier today, but Maxence Guénette pushed everyone into overtime with 3.4 seconds left in the game. With the victory subsequently consolidated in the shootout, Quebec ensured its presence in the final against the other team from Quebec.
After a three-day preliminary round, the rankings were completed tonight following the matchup between New Brunswick and Newfoundland/Labrador to set the finishing table for Sunday at the Centre Excellence Sports Rousseau in Boisbriand.
10:30 am – Newfoundland/Labrador (3rd) vs. Nova Scotia (4th)
Newfoundland/Labrador (2-2-0-0) had a very good start before facing the Quebec White team to whom they lost 9-3 earlier in the afternoon. Later, they fell 4-3 against New Brunswick, dropping to 3rd place in the preliminary competition. Bo Bennett’s team will now face Nova Scotia (1-1-1-1), which was only seconds away from practically confirming its presence in the final, before Quebec (Blue) led by Jean-François Grégoire, won in a dramatic fashion. The shootout loss, however, gave a precious point to the young Nova Scotians that will allow them to play for the 3rd place.
12:45 pm – New Brunswick (5th) vs. Prince Edward Island (6th)
New Brunswick (2-2-0-0) came out strong in a 4-3 victory over Newfoundland/Labrador in the final game of the preliminary round, including a magnificent performance by Lynden Breen, but it was already too late for Josh Hepditch’s team who finished the tournament in fifth place. They will now face Prince Edward Island (0-3-0-1) who failed to sign a victory in their four preliminary games. The clash between the two teams in the tournament’s opening matchup opened the door to a spectacular show that concluded in a 5-4 shootout win in favor of New Brunswick.
15h00 – Quebec White (1st) vs Quebec Blue (2nd)
Finally, the Quebec White was literally on a next level during this tournament with inspired performances. They managed their biggest challenge by defeating the other Quebec team on Friday night by a 5-3 score, as they were trailing 3-1 late in the second period. However, the blue team led by Jean-François Grégoire, showed a lot of resilience by coming back at the very end of it’s last game against Nova Scotia to win in shootout, thus sealing their place in great final.
