PRESS RELEASE: First Nations Game taking place Sunday Sept. 29th
BATHURST, N.B. – The Acadie-Bathurst Titan is pleased to announce the third annual First Nations Game will happen this Sunday, Sept. 29 at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre. During the game the Titan will wear orange jerseys specially designed in recognition and observance of National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.
The logo on the orange jerseys Titan players will wear on Sunday was created by Emily Isaac Johnson, a Mi’kmaw artist and author from Listuguj Miꞌgmaq First Nation, who currently lives in Sitansisk Wolastoqey, in Fredericton.
“The image designed by Mi’kmaw artist Emily Isaac Johnson is immeasurably powerful and moving. We are honoured to have her design our logo this year, as we recognize the importance of Truth & Reconciliation,” said Titan Director of Marketing and Game Day Operations, Erin White.
“As an emerging Indigenous artist, being asked to design this year’s logo is an honour. Being represented on an important day like Reconciliation Day, I hope to spark healing and understanding between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities,” said Isaac Johnson.
The traditional canoe on the water represents the children who didn’t make it home. The mountains signify the survivors and the challenges they had to overcome to keep First Nations culture alive. The sun and young dancer are the future, and the dawn of a new era of healing and understanding, of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, Isaac Johnson said.
For the past two years the Titan have held the First Nations Game in March, however, this year it was moved to the home game on Sunday, in recognition of the importance of National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.
The Titan and Pabineau First Nation held the inaugural First Nations Game in 2022. The annual game is a partnership between Pabineau First Nation and the Titan, which highlights the rich and beautiful culture of the region’s Indigenous community, while also strengthening Acadie-Bathurst’s relationship with its friends at Pabineau First Nation.
Acadie-Bathurst will host an online auction, where the public will have the opportunity to bid on one of these stunning and meaningful game-worn jerseys. The auction will start immediately following the game and will close on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 11:59 p.m. (http://abtitan.bidandraise.com)
The Titan will faceoff against the Charlottetown Islanders on Sunday, Sept. 29th at 3 p.m. at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
