GAME RECAP: Titan honour Gilles DeGrâce, Reynolds scores first career goal
The Acadie-Bathurst Titan honoured Gilles ‘Voice of the Titan’ DeGrâce Saturday night in front of an emotional crowd at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre. Underneath the press box, where DeGrâce diligently covered his hometown team, a memorial honouring his legacy was unveiled.
DeGrâce, who passed away earlier this year, would have been awfully proud of his team today as the Titan took down the Eagles 4-1 in the second of back-to-back wins over Cape Breton.
For the second straight game, Cape Breton struck first as Cole Burbidge tipped a long-range Lucas Romeo shot past Josh Fleming. About six minutes later, François-James Buteau finished a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play from Mavrick Brunet and Louis-François Bélanger. Late in the period, with the Titan pressing, Will Reynolds took a Colby Huggan feed in front and ripped it home for his first career QMJHL goal. The Titan put up a whopping 19 shots in the opening frame.
Heading into the middle period, things got physical. Noah Reinhart and David-Alexandre Coulombe would head off for cross-checking and roughing respectively, just three and a half minutes into the second period. With more room to skate, Émile Perron took advantage. The 19-year-old defenceman, and former Eagle, weaved his way through the Cape Breton defense before sliding the pass to Huggan, who finished a perfect one-timer.
Fleming was the busier of the two goaltenders in the third, facing 11 shots and plenty of high danger chances from the Eagles. Huggan would seal the game with his second of the day into the empty net. Huggan would be named the first star. Fleming finished the game 31 saves to earn the second star.
The Titan will be on the road next Saturday, Sept. 28 to face the Moncton Wildcats. The next home game will be Sunday, Sept. 29 against the Charlottetown Islanders.
