GAME RECAP: Titan fall to Islanders in afternoon match-up at home
The Acadie-Bathurst Titan fell to the Charlottetown Islanders Sunday afternoon in Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League action. Charlottetown pulled away with a 5-3 win over the home team at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
Bathurst hit the ice Sunday on the heels of a 4-2 win over Sherbrooke Friday night, while the Islanders were edged out of win Saturday night with a 2-1 loss to the Phoenix.
Before puck drop Acadie-Bathurst (21-20-2-2) headed into the match-up ranked 10th across the QMJHL and on a three-game winning streak, with the Islanders (18-24-3-2) having lost their last four games and sitting 14th in league standings. In each of their respective last 10 games, the Titan were 6-3-1-0 to Charlottetown’s 1-6-2-1 record. The Islanders are 10-12-0-0 in away games, while the Titan were 11-11-1-0 on the home side.
Charlottetown’s Cole Huckins put the first points on the board at 10:26, followed by Isaac Vos’ goal at 10:54. Simon Hughes netted the third at 19:17 on the powerplay to close the first 20 minutes 3-0 over the home team.
Bathurst started to close the gap in the second frame with back-to-back goals from Emile Perron and Yannik Ponzetto early into the frame. Perron (assists from Cory MacGillivray and Alexandre Lallier) found the back of the net at 1:31, and Ponzetto (assists Milo Roelens and Will Reynolds) at 2:41 to bring the game 3-2. The Islanders responded with their fourth and game winning goal of the night from William Shields at 7:44 to close the first 40 minutes with a 4-2 lead over Bathurst.
Colby Huggan (assists Roelens and Matthew McRae) netted Bathurst’s third goal of the night in the third period at 6:45 to again edge Charlottetown. Hughes went on to score an insurance goal at 13:20 to finish the game with a 5-3 win over the Titan.
Roelens picked up the second star of the night, and the Titan outshot the Islanders 34-23.
The Titan face off against the Moncton Wildcats on Tuesday January 30th at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre. Tuesday is the rescheduled January 10th match-up against Moncton, and tickets from Jan. 10 can be used at Tuesday’s game. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
