SUBWAY GAME RECAP: DesRoches Scores OT Winner in Charlottetown
Pavel Simek tied the game late in the third period and Charlie DesRoches scored two minutes into overtime to complete a 3-2 Saint John Sea Dogs (18-30-1-1) comeback win over the Charlottetown Islanders (18-26-5-1) on Friday night.
Simek led Saint John with a goal and an assist in the win while Nicolas Bilodeau had two assists of his own.
Ventsislav Shingarov made 25 saves to pick up the win for the Sea Dogs while Jakob Robillard made 20 stops for the Islanders.
The Islanders scored the only goal of the first period when Carl-Etienne Michel fired a point shot the Michael Horth got a piece of with a high tip, deflecting it past Shingarov to make it 1-0 just under eight minutes in.
Alex Drover came close to tying it for the Sea Dogs in the final minute before the intermission, making a great move to get past a Charlottetown defender and put a high backhand shot on but Robillard shut the door.
Shots after the first were 8-6 for the Islanders.
Simek had an early chance to put the Sea Dogs on the board 1:52 into the second, receiving the puck in the slot for a wrist shot that Robillard made a huge glove save on.
1:23 later Simek found Danny Akkouche in the same spot only for Robillard to flash the leather again.
Just over two minutes after that, with the Sea Dogs on the powerplay, Simek found Alexis Cournoyer at the Islanders backdoor and he made no mistake with an open net to finally tie the game 1-1.
Shots after the second were 20-16 for Charlottetown.
Simon Hughes regained the lead for the Islanders 1:28 into the third, gathering puck to the left of the Sea Dogs goals, spinning towards the front of the net and sliding the puck five-hole on Shingarov to make it 2-1.
With just under five minutes left in regulation, Simek entered the Islanders zone with speed, made a nice move to get past a defender and this time he kept it himself and tucked it past Robillard to tie it at 2-2, sending the game to overtime.
Shots after the third period were 27-21 for Charlottetown.
Charlottetown took a penalty 26 seconds into overtime, giving the Sea Dogs a 4-on-3 powerplay.
1:34 into the man-advantage, Charlie DesRoches fired a point shot that found its way through traffic and past Robillard, completing the comeback and giving the Sea Dogs the 3-2 win.
Final shots were 27-23 for Charlottetown.
