RECAP: Sea Dogs toppled by Islanders in preseason showdown
SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs faced off against the Charlottetown Islanders at TD Station on Sunday afternoon, looking to build on their 3-1 preseason record. Goaltender Justin Robinson made some early key saves, but the Islanders poured it on as the game progressed.
Robinson set the tone early in the first period with a huge pad save at 1:12. Despite that, Islanders defenceman Mathis Valente opened the scoring at 9:25 off an unfortunate bounce, making it 1-0. The Sea Dogs created chances, including a mad scramble initiated by Tyler Peddle’s shot on the powerplay, but couldn’t find twine. First period concluded with the Sea Dogs leading slightly in shots, 15-14, but trailing 1-0 on the scoreboard.
7:34 into the second period Matthew Butler profited on a powerplay to extend Charlottetown’s lead to 2-0. Another Dogs penalty led to a second Islanders powerplay goal at 11:45, scored by Spencer Caines. By the end of the second, the Sea Dogs found themselves down 4-0 after a late goal by Nikita Voyaga, despite still holding a slight edge in shots, 24-23.
The third period opened with Ross Campbell scoring just 28 seconds in, making it 5-0. Madden Steen followed up at 4:47 with another goal, increasing the Islanders lead to 6-0. Although the Sea Dogs had a late powerplay opportunity after an Islanders penalty at 18:45, they couldn’t convert, ending the game with a tough 6-0 loss.
