RECAP: Sea Dogs shut out in Cape Breton
SYDNEY, NS – The Saint John Sea Dogs faced a challenging night Friday against the Cape Breton Eagles at Centre 200. With several regulars out of the lineup with injuries, the Sea Dogs were unable to solve Eagles goaltender Jakub Milota as Cape Breton claimed a conclusive 5-0 victory.
Jacob Newcombe led the charge for the Eagles with two goals, while Will Murphy, Lucas Romeo, and Cole Burbridge also found the back of the net.
GAME SUMMARY
Both teams remained scoreless until five minutes left in the first period, when Luke Patterson set up Will Murphy, who fooled Charles-Édward Gravel with a low shot along the ice to make it 1-0 Eagles.
The second period saw strong defensive efforts from both sides, with only six shots registered by the Sea Dogs and five by the Eagles.
The Eagles broke the game open in the final frame. Five minutes in, Cam Squires batted the puck out of mid-air to Jacob Newcombe, who lifted it over Gravel to extend the lead to 2-0. At 8:12, Lucas Romeo capitalized on a pass from Angelo Fullerton, tucking the puck inside the far post to make it 3-0.
Just over a minute later, Newcombe recorded his second goal of the night on the power play, redirecting a deliberate shot off his skate from Tomas Lavoie. With three minutes remaining, Rory Pilling sent Cole Burbridge in alone, and he beat Gravel far post to cap off the game at 5-0.
