RECAP: Sea Dogs fall to Islanders in shootout
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Saint John Sea Dogs began a busy three-game week with a 6-5 shootout loss to the Charlottetown Islanders on Thursday night at the Eastlink Centre.
The Islanders, coming off two straight losses, came flying out of the gates outshooting Saint John for most of the opening frame. QMJHL leading goal scorer Michael Horth opened the scoring at the 8:22 mark to give the home side the edge 1-0. Vince Elie finished off a great play by Eriks Mateiko to even the score at one less than three minutes later. The score remained 1-1 after 20 minutes of play with the shots tied at 12 apiece.
Charlottetown jumped out to a two-goal lead early in the second period with goals 1:15 apart. Lucas Romeo made it 2-1 just 1:20 into the middle frame before Ross Campbell fired home his third of the season at 2:35. Saint John struck back shortly after when Tristan Dassylva sent a long stretch pass to Pavel Simek and he buried his fifth of the season on the breakaway to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the third period the Sea Dogs scored three times in the first 10 minutes to pull ahead 5-3. Joseph Ianniello’s powerplay marker 2:08 into the period tied the game 3-3 and Peter Reynolds added his sixth of the campaign at 4:26 to put Saint John in front 4-3. Eriks Mateiko put one by fellow Latvian Aksels Ozols to extend the Sea Dogs lead to two at the 9:34 mark. Horth and Giovanni Morneau found the back of the net at 11:07 and 11:45 respectively to erase the two-goal deficit and sending the game to overtime.
Neither team was able to put one home in the extra frame so a shootout was required. Campbell and Marcus Kearsey scored in the shootout for Charlottetown while Mateiko was the lone goal scorer for Saint John as the Islanders skated away with a 6-5 victory.
The Sea Dogs travel to Moncton for a Friday night showdown with the Wildcats before heading back to TD Station where they’ll host the Quebec Remparts on Sunday at 3:00 pm for the Halloween Game.
