RECAP: Sea Dogs fall flat in loss to Gatineau
GATINEAU, QC – Midway through their eight-game road trip, the Saint John Sea Dogs played the Gatineau Olympiques at Slush Puppie Centre ending in a 7-1 defeat.
The game began with a disciplined first period by both teams, with only three penalties handed out, including a tripping call against Nate Tivey at 7:00. The period’s lone goal came from Gatineau forward Nathan Lévesque, who scored on a breakaway with only four seconds remaining, bringing the score to 1-0 in favour of the Olympiques. The first period concluded with the Olympiques leading in shots, 10-6.
In the second period, Gatineau extended their lead with Sander Wold scoring at 10:24, followed by Lévesque’s second goal of the night less than a minute later. Jérémie Minville and Justin Boisselle also found the back of the net at 12:35 and 19:28 respectively, boosting the Olympiques lead to 5-0 while the Sea Dogs also trailed significantly in shots, 25-11, by the end of the second.
The third period saw Sea Dogs forward Eriks Mateiko break the shutout with a powerplay goal at 6:54, assisted by Coen Miller and Tivey, bringing a moment of hope. However, Boisselle’s second goal at 13:58 and William Labranche’s last second goal ensured a 7-1 victory for the Olympiques, with final shots on goal at 23 for the Sea Dogs and 32 for the Olympiques.
Expecting to bounce back following the tough three-game trip to Quebec, the Sea Dogs will face the Acadie-Bathurst Titan this Friday at 7 pm at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
