RECAP: Sea Dogs fall flat against Charlottetown
SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs got off to a slow start in game one of Pink in the Rink Weekend at TD Station, ultimately falling to the Charlottetown Islanders 6-2 on Friday night. Their record drops to 11-13-0-0 this season.
Ross Campbell had two goals for the Islanders while the others were scored by Egor Goriunov, Mathis Valente, Jude Herron, and William Shields.
Sea Dogs goals were scored by Dylan Rozzi and Eriks Mateiko.
GAME SUMMARY
After a Sea Dogs goal was overturned for offside, Islanders forward Nathan Leek chipped the puck to Ross Campbell, who made a nifty move and beat Charles-Édward Gravel at the 10:57 mark of the first period. Just over a minute later, Matthew Butler found Egor Goriunov with a crisp pass for an easy tap-in on the powerplay, extending the Islanders’ lead to 2-0.
1:42 into the second period, the Islanders extended their lead to 3-0 as Mathis Valente sniped a shot off the post and in, ending Gravel’s night as Justin Robinson took over in goal. Just three minutes later, William Shields capitalized on a rebound from teammate Goriunov, driving it home on the backhand.
With a two-man advantage, Olivier Duhamel fed Egan Beveridge at the goal line, who passed cross-ice to Dylan Rozzi and he buried a one-timer over Donald Hickey, getting the Sea Dogs on the board.
Just short of four minutes into the third, Jude Herron fired a shot that bounced into the net off of Robinson’s back. Sea Dogs captain Eriks Mateiko answered 14 seconds later when he went end-to-end and scored on a wraparound making it 5-2.
The Sea Dogs would allow a sixth goal, on the penalty kill, after a tic-tac-toe passing play between Goriunov, Butler, and ending with Campbell scoring to finalize the 6-2 final score.
